I was wondering if anyone had any info on scanning daguerreotypes.There under glass so would really appreciate any tips on getting good scans.

P.S.: Check other types like "ambrotypes" "tintypes" etc. Unless you are possitive that it is a daguerreotype what you have. :)

I'm doing some research on daguerrotypes and ambrotypes as well as other cased images. Whatever you do, do not remove the glass as you may destroy the image.

In addition to trying to scan the image through the glass, you might try taking a picture of it with a digital camera. Experiment with diffused lighting to eliminate glare. Or contact a photographer who might have the equipment to get the best reproduction of the image.

Please let us know how things work out. You'll be doing family historians everywhere a huge favor.

Although I could be wrong, as always, I think a copy made with a camera is going to be the best technique. If you're not familiar with copy techniques, you can get good books from the library, or you can probably find good info on the web. With a dag, it will take more than merely snapping a shot of it. You will need to play with lighting angles, use a tripod, and watch for reflection of the camera or other things on the glass. Good luck, and let us know your progress.
