View Full Version : Geometrics, Shapes, and Designs! Kraellin 01-10-2006, 10:55 PM since we have a 'mosaics' thread, and since i just found a new plugin (well, new to me. the xero plugins that danny referenced in another thread), i thought i'd post a recent example of that plugin and start a new thread with it. this is actually a very common theme for 'art' and yet i've not seen one here before. it's not necessarily photo art, but i think that would be ok.
so, the theme here is post one of your own design or create something with something someone else posts. make your own, or alter someone else's. these shld be geometric designs, or shapes or patterns or anything similar.
also, unless you specify otherwise, ANY image posted here shld be with the understanding that someone else is free to alter that same image and post another version of it. so, if you really DON'T want someone else copying and altering yours, just say so when you post it. otherwise, they are all free game :)
and as danny always says, 'have fun!'.
craig palms1 01-11-2006, 12:48 PM Craig just found this, not exactly sure what you mean, but as i am just signing of for the night, will give it some thought and be back tomorrow,
Palms palms1 01-12-2006, 07:25 AM Hi Craig
Dont think i have understood where you want to go with this thread, but as so far i am the only one having a go, you will have to put up with me
For these i used a photo "hanks Rose" from a previous challenge and the Mehdi plug in Kaleidoscope 2.1 from here
http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/kaleidoscope.htm
(just in case thank you Danny again ! !)
The only thing is, it is fun and so i have spent some time playing with it
Palms Janet Petty 01-12-2006, 07:28 AM In case some of you weren't aware there is an older thread in this forum entitled kaleisoscopes. You might want to check it out. It has been just a tad more than popular in the past. :)
Janet
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2738&highlight=kaleidoscope philbach 01-12-2006, 10:49 AM Well I use Artmatic Pro (Mac Application) to make interesting movie backgrounds. It is like kaleidoscope on steroids and has absolutely endless possibilities Kraellin 01-12-2006, 11:28 AM palms,
that's exactly what i meant. so, yer fine :)
and to janet, i'll answer your last p.m here. thanks for the link to the kaleidoscope thread. i'm going to leave this thread here as a broader topic than just the kaleidoscope one. this would be for all geometric ar, pattern art, shape art and so on. philbach's example is a perfect one that would fit here, but not so well in the kaleidoscope one. yes, my first example i posted here would have fit very well in the other thread, but my intention for this new thread was for all types of geometric art (and there's a LOT of it out there). the kaleidoscope thread could easily have been a sub thread of this one had this thread existed first.
but, thank you for posting that link. i had not seen that thread before and it's a VERY good one! even got a plugin there and that's always worth a visit :)
btw, very nice, philbach. wish that program existed for windows too.
craig Swampy 01-12-2006, 12:12 PM Well, mine's not "perfect", but I had fun trying to do a butterfly keildoscope so that you can actually see butterflies and they don't get totally lost in the transition. palms1 01-12-2006, 12:26 PM Craig
Glad to have got it right. I think i understand more from the other posts, "Geometric Art", I have no doubt i will be back ,
Phil i think maybe it is a good job artmatic is for mac's as that looks like a lot of fun too.
Swampy that is quite beautiful with the butterflies
Palms
well i did say i would be back, philbach 01-12-2006, 01:42 PM Hey I better stop cluttering up the site. Chance_1 01-12-2006, 07:52 PM Here is my rendition of a geometric shape.
A digital flower done in Alias Maya 3d.
Chance lkroll 01-12-2006, 07:53 PM Another Fractal Trace (thanks to GIMP). :) ahutton 01-13-2006, 04:44 PM This is sort of a fractal program, but gives really ethereal results. The first is the original, the second after using the PSP8 rotating mirror.
Original full size at http://bigbluebird.com/apooriginal.jpg
<orrored at http://bigbluebird.com/apophythislarge.jpg
Program is Apophysis 2.0. You'd have to Google it to find it. Freebie.
Amy lkroll 01-13-2006, 05:12 PM Looks like the classic Butterfly model (use to be very big into fractals in the '80s; still enjoy the art out of the chaos thats at its core). :) Marthig 01-13-2006, 08:47 PM Well Craig you've hit on another addictive subject. Love kaleidoscopes since my dad gave me one when I was 3 or 4 years old.
I am not sure up to how many files can be uploaded in one post so will post two here and two more in a subsequent one.
I made them in Ulead PhotoImpact v.6 and used the kaleidoscope filter :ditsy: (I am so clever :) ) The original is a screen shot of the Alchemy visual of Windows Media Player.
See you in the next post :wavey: Marthig 01-13-2006, 08:52 PM This is the last installment, the original is an image downloaded from Morguefile or ElDorado can't quite remember and the effect is like the previous one the Kaleidoscope filter of Ulead Photo Impact V.6.
Hope you like them ! :)
Regards and thank you for reviving this thread ! :wavey: Kraellin 01-14-2006, 09:58 AM very cool, folks :)
craig raniday 01-15-2006, 05:42 PM I started out by using one of the Simple filters called Top Left Mirror, then used Redfield. lkroll 01-17-2006, 10:38 PM I used a GIMP kaleidoscope filter (only runs in GIMP 1.2x unfortunately) and created the kaleidoscope. I then used the Stitch preset for Impressionist and cut out the result and placed on a canvas texture. I added the outline stitch by using vector means (cheated I did). The outline was then fed into GIMP's bumpmap filter to give it some dimensionality equivalent to the other threads (close enough anyway). I couldn't post the complete rendering here (even the crop had to be saved at 30% quality; still looks surprisingly good. The following link (http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/8673/kaleidoscope8da.jpg) is nearly a megabyte, so just be aware of that (saved at 80% quality to keep withing ImageShack's requirements). :) palms1 01-18-2006, 03:01 AM Ikroll Dont get me wrong, but even though i like your other stitch photo's i think this one shows the "stitching" at it's best,
Now how are you at darning socks and sewing buttons back on ! ! :D

I'm sorry Palms, but, like the Lawnmower Man (and until recently that was all I was for my parents; :lmao: ), I only deal in virtual realities. :) Photomaster 01-18-2006, 03:17 PM This site has some FUN AND INTERESTING plugins for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, PP, etc.:
MEHDI (http://www.mehdiplugins.com/index.htm)
I especially like the "Projection" and "Kaleidoscope" plugins. Some examples attached. Additional embellishments added to some images.
Have fun! Photomaster 01-18-2006, 03:33 PM The background in this image was done with the Medhi "Projection" plugin. The iris was in my garden last summer.
Link: MEDHI (http://www.mehdiplugins.com/index.htm) lkroll 01-18-2006, 06:36 PM Thanks for the link. :) palms1 01-19-2006, 06:19 AM Great works photomaster hard to pick which one would be my favorite, but possibly the iris or design 10 ( like a snowflake)
the mehdi plug ins are great i regulary use fine threshold, edge effects and recently kaleidoscope.
Palms Photomaster 01-19-2006, 10:48 AM Great works photomaster hard to pick which one would be my favorite, but possibly the iris or design 10 ( like a snowflake)
Palms
Thank you Palms.
The "snowflake" started out as a photo of the roof trusses on my new garage.
This "rug" design is from a picture of an egret wading in the surf. The U.S. Capitol design is from a shot I took in Sept. Kraellin 01-19-2006, 11:56 AM very nice, photomaster :)
i recently found the medhi plugins also. and yes, i find them pretty interesting also, but i've mostly been playing with the eraser plugs. pretty cool.
craig palms1 01-19-2006, 12:52 PM Get the feeling we still havent done as you intended Craig ? no one has used anybody else's image
but it has still been fun
Palms Kraellin 01-19-2006, 12:57 PM palms,
no, yer doin fine :) the basic idea was to expand the kaleidoscope thread out ot ALL shapes and figures and such. that anyone might use someone else's is just an added extra if folks want.
btw, i like the fuzzy, furriness of your last one there :)
craig patriciakay 01-20-2006, 10:37 AM Hello Craig and all....
love all the effects you have done...my fave is the iris by photomaster as i am a flower person....
here is my attempt...hope it qualifies....it was a photo i had taken of 3 anenomes, changed the colors and did a paint job in twisted brush...for the pattern i used KPT hypertiling... then added a border...
kind regards
Patricia kay RL Design 01-20-2006, 01:25 PM What a fun thread... these were created with KTP Hyper Tiling... palms1 01-20-2006, 02:18 PM wow

Robin love your effects...do tell how you did them...did you use a photo or a special design??????
Kind regards Patricia kay Photomaster 01-21-2006, 07:55 PM Made a series of boxes and circles in Photoshop. Applied Medhi kalaidoscope then Distort, Spherize. Selected sphere, copied to new layer. Added new BG and detail from photo of my grandson at the playground. Janet Petty 01-21-2006, 09:08 PM Photomaster, I've been following this thread and must say that you have some GREAT pieces here.
Janet Kraellin 01-21-2006, 10:42 PM love that last one, photomaster!
craig patriciakay 01-22-2006, 03:48 AM :wavey: :wavey: Think you have great ideas photomaster, loved the last one you did....
Had another play and this is what happened, I first smudged the Cosmos in Twisted brush...a free program....then i did the small flowers in the background with the art history brush in Photoshop...KPT hypertiling...edges in Paintshop Pro 9...
Kind regards Patricia Kay.. Kraellin 01-22-2006, 12:01 PM very cool, patricia. i like the first one just a bit more.
i'm glad to see we're moving a bit away from straight kaleidoscopes and totally mirrored images. that was the intent.
craig ahutton 01-22-2006, 12:47 PM Then there is my personal favorite, Flaming Pear's Polymerge. This makes a composite of several works that I have previously worked on with PSP8 and various filters.
I call this first one "Kitty."
Full size version at http://bigbluebird.com/kitty.jpg
Second one is a kaleidoscope that I ran through VP impasto then used FP flexify on it. Full version at http://www.bigbluebird.com/studyinblueandwhite.jpg
Amy lkroll 01-22-2006, 01:24 PM Sorry for the late response. Very impressed with your results. A really am in awe with Robin's versions too. :) lkroll 01-22-2006, 10:43 PM Some extremely cool info on tessellations (such as Escher's versions) can be found here (http://www.tessellations.org/links.htm). I used techniques from this site to create this tesselation. The GIMP pattern file is also attached (for those who want to play). Just use this pattern and fill the selection. :) Photomaster 01-22-2006, 11:06 PM Thanks Craig and Janet. Glad you enjoy my "chips." I can never stop after just one.
Have some more! All done with Medhi plugins with additional work in Photoshop. patriciakay 01-23-2006, 04:52 AM Hi, This is so much fun....
Photomaster....great effects again....its very addictive.....
Ikroll....Thanks for the links..i hadnt heard of tessellations before..there you are even learning new words in retouch...liked your effect too.
ahutton...very nice...i also like polymerge and all the flaming pear pluggins....

Have fun...Patricia Kay lkroll 01-23-2006, 12:36 PM Ikroll....Thanks for the links..i hadnt heard of tessellations before..there you are even learning new words in retouch...liked your effect too.
Yup, you caught me; these words make me sound intelligent (in which I'm not). LOL Kraellin 01-24-2006, 07:17 AM for those maybe wondering what are tessalations, here is a definition pulled off the site that lkroll linked to:
What are Tessellations
The word 'tessera' in latin means a small stone cube. They were used to make up 'tessellata' - the mosaic pictures forming floors and tilings in Roman buildings
Here, the term has become more specialised and is used to refer to pictures or tiles, mostly in the form of animals and other life forms, which cover the surface of a plane in a symmetrical way without overlapping or leaving gaps. You can see examples top right as you move about this site.
interesting site, lk. and if you look around on there you can find a link to 'Tess', a piece of software you can download to make tessalations. seems to be free, but i havent installed yet, so dont know for sure.
craig palms1 01-24-2006, 09:04 AM craig
you can add mind reading to your c.v. i did wonder what tesselations were but just to lazy to google it
Palms Kraellin 01-24-2006, 01:13 PM palms,
i knew you were going to say that ;)
craig Kraellin 06-05-2006, 09:24 PM well, i had to dig down in the pages here to find this thread again, but i needed it. this was one of those happy little accidents that occurs every once in a while when you're playing around.
i was messing around in filter forge with some different things, trying out this and that and hit on this. i'll let you figure out if it's an optical illusion or not.
craig Dm_Cher 06-06-2006, 02:30 AM Try use Tile Builder - Photoshop-compatible plugin for tile generation.
It will be useful for web designers, artist and computer graphics enthusiasts. It allows you create fantastic patterns by one touch.
There are 17 methods - symmetry rules.
Demo version Tile Builder (http://www.imageskill.com/tilebuilder/TileBuilderDemo_Setup.exe)
Tile Builder home page (http://www.imageskill.com/tilebuilder/tilebuilder.html)
You can save seamless tile and use it anywhere. palms1 06-06-2006, 06:14 AM Craig that hurts my eyes and my brain ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! but it is cool
Dm cher interesting tiles
Palms Lorenzo 06-06-2006, 01:46 PM I've also been playing with tesselations the last few months using Lattice XP by www.redfieldplugins.com (http://www.redfieldplugins.com) and PSP X. I've also used some Flaming Pear filters.
Here are some examples that people have said that they enjoy: 1 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1233510/2/59654852/Large) 2 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1233510/3/59681357/Large) 3 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1233510/4/59949921/Large) 4 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1233510/5/60155998/Large)
Regards,
Lorenzo ahutton 06-06-2006, 02:10 PM A man after my own heart. I love it. What flaming pear and redfield filters do you use most often for these?
Amy Lorenzo 06-06-2006, 02:44 PM Thanks. I use mostly FP's Flexify 2 + Aetherize, along with Redfieldplugin's Lattice XP. Here's some Orbs I've made using the same filters as well as the polar->rectangular + flip + rectangular -> polar transform: Orb 112 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1235411/4/58952687) Orb 103 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1235411/4/58726746) Orb 114 (http://www.tropicalearth.com/gallery/1232362/6/59075467)
Lorenzo Peter S 06-06-2006, 04:26 PM Used KPT Planer tiling, mirrored and added zoom blur to soften.
Hope it not too painful on the eyes!!!! Lorenzo 06-06-2006, 05:46 PM Peter S,
I like it since it reminds me of the stargate sequence in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. What incredible things Kubrick accomplished without computers!
Lorenzo Kraellin 06-06-2006, 11:12 PM dm_cher,
looks like an interesting program.
palms,
hurts my brain too. i had to load it into Paint Shop Pro and turn the grid on to figure out if it was an illusion or not.
peter,
very cool :)
