can someone tell me if a photo taken out of focus can be fixed so that is in focus?

Unfortunatly, probably not. Pictures that are out of focus or blurry are missing the detailed information that would be needed for a sharp image. Sharpening tools can adjust the contrast (blacks and whites), but are not adding any detail.

it depends on how badly they are out of focus. there are some decent programs for handling this condition, Unshake, Focus Magic and probably some more. post an example of what you've got and we can help you better.

It is pretty optically blurred. This may be an improvement, but not that much. Regards, Murray

This is what I came up with using Vinther's Image Analyzer software and running the deconvulusion filter.

It was a bit hard working with a low res copy, but this is the result using CS2 motion blur filter, then unsharpen mask and final sharpening and noise removal in neatimage ;)

this was done with Unshake, portrait, 10. very decent focuser for a freebie and even if it wasnt a freebie.

1. High Pass sharpen, 3 pixels, 100 strength, overlay
2. High Pass sharpen, 1.5 pixels, 50 strength, hard light
3. JPEG artifact removal (you wouldn't have to do that)
4. NR in PSPX. small noise 50%--others set to 0. blend at 50%.

i liked that. i'd forgotten about vinther's. i ran it after doing the Unshake and also got some good results. thanks for the reminder!

I left out the last, most interesting step! The image has some camera shake in it, so I copied the previous final result shifted slightly up and to the right, set opacity to about 15%, and set blend mode to difference. This effectively subtracts the ghost out. I applied a final curve to brighten it back up again.

Something to remember when using the deconvolution filter in Image Analyser......

The filter will analyse the whole image to calculate the best coordinates for the Motion Blur correction.
In this case the image is blurred but the surrounding white border is not. To give the fiilter a more "pure" sample to work on it is best to crop away the border.

I tried it both ways and found the result without the border to be visibly better.
