I have been messing with the custom filter ( filter>other>custom) and now i cant remember what the original settings were :confused: could anybody please have a look and let me know (ps7) as i do use this on odd occasions.

If that big black and tan dog is part of the default setting, I'm not sure how your use of the filter will affect "Poppy the puppy"?! :eek:

Hi,

Gary beat me on the 'default' Custom Filter settings .... and took me to a very emotional memory trip...

I always had dogs ... and always Dobermanns even when my children were very small .... and I agree ... they are incredibly sweet dogs ... Actually our last dogs were a Dobermann and a Toy Yorkie (my daughter's) .... and the aggressive one was the Yorkie!!!!

Sadly, we can't keep animals anymore since, because of my husband's business, we live a gypsy kind of life .. meaning 6 months in Europe and 6 months in South Africa ... (in South Africa they call people like us 'Swallows' ... :wink: ) .... so ... thanks Gary for bringing those feelings back!!!

Well here's a couple of outcomes (one being my first with impressionist) not only do i hope that you like them, but more to the point hopefully Sasha and Susie will like them, because it looks as if they could run a darn site faster than me, and thanks Gary for posting the photo

Hi Flora, with your lifestyle I can see why you can't have dogs, they do tie you down quite a lot. I've just had to cancel this years skiing holiday, because the guy who usually house sits for us, and looks after them when we're away, can't do it this year. Its the first time in 16 years I haven't skied, so I expect to have severe withdrawal symptoms for the next few months.

Know what you mean about small dogs being more aggressive. Sasha regularly gets bullied by a small Bedlington Terrier on a morning where we go walking. It tried the same with Susie, but she just showed him her teeth, and he thought twice about it.

But Sasha's such a softy that she just rolls over and gives in. The only dog she'll stand up to is Susie. She often gets the better of her when the play fights get a little serious, so its not that she can't defend herself, just that she won't.

Any time you want a Doberman fix, just let me know, and I'll post a few pictures, I've got lots, from puppy to adult.

Sometimes i use the custom setting on art work as i like the effect i sometimes get !
But i have no idea what it is or what it does, The first tutorial that you mentioned was the one that sort of caused me my problem, i had seen it in the "similar threads " and had a look, but it all went over my head a bit that's when i thought if i fiddled around a bit i might understand it more
i did find that if i changed the 5 to 6 it gave me the lighter look i achieved here

Paint Shop Pro 10 has an excellent 'user defined filter' tool. it's a big improvement over what was in version 9 and i believe it's probably better than photoshop's similar system.

attached is a screenshot of just one of my presets for this and another attachment of how i used that image. notice in the screenshot the little image of a die (plural dice). this is used to randomize the filter settings. this makes for some great hunt and peck on setting filters. hit the die, a new set of random numbers and settings comes up and if you like it, you just save it as a preset. very cool. the other nice improvement is that all the number value boxes can be individually rolled up or down. you dont have to select each box and type in a value. there are also settings for whether you want the filter in color or black and white and you can also remove the various color channels or combine them how you want.

on the lower left is a 'divisor' for dividing the tabulations of the main filter box values. this is also adjustable and can change things greatly. thus, if you find something you sort of like in the main grid, you can alter the whole by changing the divisor. this is a good way of tweaking the grid to something you might like a bit more or to give you a number of variations on the same preset. below that is the 'bias'. this is mostly a gamma setting option to brighten or darken your overall effect.

all in all, it's a pretty handy tool. i've got presets for high pass sharpen, moonlight, colored pencil, colored foil, emboss and so on. and, most of those were found with the randomize die, or tweaked after finding something close.

the 2nd image was done by taking the image in the screenshot, setting the blend mode to soft light, duplicating that layer and adding an adjustment layer of contrast/lighten. very simple, very fast, and lots of fun :)

i've never tried to export any of these presets. so, i dont know if it can be done or not. i would suspect that it can be, even if you had to go into windows explorer to do it.

The custom filter (Called User Defined) comes with loads of kernels which can be loaded from the filters folder.
