Impressionist, Paint Engine, DCSpecial's 1969, Cybia's Eliminate Black, and a few other layer property settings along with GIMP's Bumpmapping for texture and applied canvas on the Eliminate Black layer. :)

Used my Impressionist Thread filter for this one. Some Retinex equalization and Blur Subtract sharpening too. :)

Well, it looks like a very intimate moment for these lovely birds. I wanted a secluded place for them to preen. More manipulation than artsy work here just softened the saturation, re colorized the water at their feet, cloned the reeds on the right over to the left to cover up the murky water, left a bit of "civilization" show in the upper left and set a soft spotlight effect on the ladies and then ran a lighting effect on the same general lit area.

Thank you Patricia Kay! It was a fun picture to work on. :-)

About cameras... I have a pretty good Canon PowerShot Pro and I turst its auto functions for the most part. I never understood F stops, apertures, etc. Most of the time I get the shot then rely on PhotoShop to correct my mistakes.

From time to time I do have to be on my best behavior when a client asks me to take a photo that they will incorporate into an ad. Not a thing in the world I can do when an office staff group shot (6 of them) all come out with the same person with eyes shut!! Arrrgh..

Thanks for your reply Swampy....i also have a canon but the A300...since i have got totally into the digital art thing, i want to buy a camera with a good lense...i intend to read up and pick brains before i decide...Peter has a Sigma film camera...seldom used..so i will play with that too although i love digital..its so instant...

Kind regards Patricia Kay..

Nice, Nan. The painterly versions work well with this slightly blown out photo.

Hi Nanis...love the painterly effect you have done...in Spain just now enjoying the winter sun..a bit further down from Barcelona in the Costa del Sol..It is a great place to be..

Hi Swampy....a question...what is blown out and what can i do not to do that?

Kind regards Patricia Kay

Patricia Kay

Blown Out referrs to white areas that have no pixel information because it's "off the chart". Over exposure of light areas. For example a light blue sky, that looks "white", but you know it had some color in it is said to be "blown out" and any existing color gets blown away.

Some of the highlight areas in the birds picture had very little color information in them to work with when setting a curve or level adjustment.

Thanks swampy and Patricia...
ahhh Costa del Sol, I love that area. Malaga has some outstanding wines, and Marbella is soooo beautiful. Can't wait to get back there. You are sooo lucky to live there, what a lifestye. Do you know this area from Costa Brava (pic attached, right above Blanes?

First: Levels and Hue Saturation applied to background to brighten it up and bring out some colors.

Then
* (bottom layer): Duplicate of improved Background + Impressionist plugin
* (top layer): Duplicate of improved Background + Photoshop Dry Brush selectively applied using a layer mask

Still at the beach, until end of Feb., and loving it. Beach panorama from yesterday HERE (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12844)

Shooting about 100 picts a day. Finally filled my 40GB hard drive and had to copy to cd's. Monday it was ducks. This is a winter area for many species of waterfowl and song birds.

Hello Photomaster...The panoramic view was lovely...glad you are enjoying your break and taking lots of photos....the only birds on the beach here in Spain are seagulls...not as exciting as yours....I am taking lots of photos too and filling my CDs quickly...but it will be nice to look back on when we are home and i have more time..

Hi Phil,
I love how you have done the pelicans,do you know of any other program where you can get a similar effect as i believe studio artist is for a mac....

Craig the bright colors and detail are great..pity you cant remember how it was done....

Good question. I am trying to learn Studio Artist and to me its a daunting program. It does not alter the base image but works on a replica of it. The authors in my opinion have gone somewhat crazy with options. Like they have 3200 presets. Yet with minimal knowledge you can do stuff. It seems that Gertrudis Pro mentioned on this site works the same way in that it doesn't work on the original image but uses the original image as a template for its work.

I suspect others here will be a tad more knowledgeable about Windows applications. For several years I wanted an application that had a painterly feel to it. It looks like I now have what I wanted in Spades.

Thanks for your reply Phil...sorry about the delay in replying...its fun to try the different programs and what they can do...will be back home late March then i can get stuck into the paint effects again and posting to retouchpro...sadly the pelicans are not at Paloma Park just now...got some nice swan photos though...going to a park called Senda next week so we will see what interesting animals are there...it is said it takes 4 hours to walk round so it should be fun...

patricia,

thank you :)

all i remember was some smudging, some contrast and a whole lot of layers. i get going on some of these and just lose all track. my history palette looks like a minefield...things that blew up, things that didnt, things that shld have :)
