The key to a problem-free update is in the instructions.

1) Turn of anti-virus when installing

2) Reboot system.

3) On the first running of the program after reboot, hold down the shift key when starting painter. This brings the program back to factory state.

The guy who had the problem didn't do this last step, and had crashing issues since. (I would also recommend leaving anti-virus off when doing this step as well...)
