I just discovered that you *can* undo the extraction in the extract filter (photoshop cs2)--you don't have to start over again. Here's how:

So you're looking at the extraction and you want to do it over, so go down to the preview area and change the "show:" pulldown from "extracted" to "original".

Now click the "show highlight" and/or "show fill" boxes and it will restore your highlight and shadows so you can make another attempt.

I don't use the Extract Filter much, but when I do and I'm not satisfied with my selection, I usually go for the ALT>Reset .... but then I have to start all over again...

The extract filter it's awesome, buuuut, I think a better trick it's this:

1. Duplicate the background and mask with your favorite process (Attachment 1)

2. Soften the ants with feader (or feather, can't remember) this found in the SELECTION MENU, one or two pixels are just apropiated.

3. Use the extract tool or simply inverse selection and click in the DELETE key.

4. Duplicate background layer again.

5. Load a new selection using the extracted layer that you have already in the top.- command+click in the layer (for mac) or ctrl+click in the layer (for PC) .- And now use this new selection to create a layer mask on the new duplicated background layer. Delete the above layer, we don't need it now.

I did this because the extract filter always works better with hairs than other tools, so this is not achived as a mask, but we need a mask for:

6. Now that it seems that you worked more than you really needed, just use the brush in the layer mask, with Black to contract extraction and white to expand it.

This way you can control the detail in the hair, in the clothes, in the furniture, in everything!, also you can go back and forth with all the edges of your extraction.
