If you're looking for something that simplifies and/or automates the process and gets decent results, I am not aware of any program that will do that. That includes programs like Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Deep Paint, Photo-paint, Painter, etc. None can do this type of thing without fair amount of manual effort and good drawing/painting skills.

Xero Filters (free) can do a decent job of creating a cartoon effect in any program that used Photoshop filters. The attached image was done, in Photoshop, with the Line Art (set to Linear Burn) and Lithograph filters. Image took less than 5 minutes to make.

Second image done in Deep Paint (free program) using the same filters.

I've seen a few actions on actionexchange that do the same job.

flash auto-trace does an OK job but you'd still need a lot of manual touchups. IT all really depends what kind of cartoon you want.

It all really depends what kind of cartoon you want.That I'll agree with. Many times it's very difficult to describe in words the effect one seeks to achieve.

This is as close I have gotten...

I have this on my website and reminds me of that old Dire Straits video in the 80s. "I want my MTV" HAHAHA

...that on Action Central's website would be a cool start. Expound on one's primary features and then render. If in GIMP, try to create a high key to get the outlines and set that result to Value (base layer the caricature version of course). As far as filters, the only filter I know of is you or anyone else who's creative. That's unfortunate since I strive to get the computer to do all the work. Maybe someone will come up with either an action or filter. :)

Per outline earlier. I used Xero's Pastellize filter to detect the outline. I then duplicated this layer and set the top layer to Multiply and then duplicated this layer a few times. I merged the outline layer to a single layer and set to Value. I then duplicated the base layer and ran Gaussean blur on the center layer and selectively erased around the eyes and teeth. I also desaturated the teeth more to get it more white. Again, I'm the filter this time. GIMP's Value layer property is awesome. I wish Photoshop had a Value layer property (luminosity is alright for certain things, but, if given a chance, I would choose Value over luminosity a 1000 fold). :)

Ok i have been trying to find the cartoon channel ( most of the morning and no housework done!) and i really dont know why except for the challenge, ( i am a sucker) Well what do you think is it there or not? please be honest i wont call you any worse names than i already have :blush: :lol:

Cartoons have evolved over the years. Look at the first Disney cartoons of Mickey Mouse. Look at Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty (both Disney) years later and see the changes and sophistication. Dick Tracy and Little Abner were also cartoons; so were the Transformers and others. The list goes on. Now look at the Simpsons, etc. Styles have changed and will continue to do so.

Come on now. Don't say these renditions don't look like cartoons. Cartoons are simplistic and stylized drawings meant to respresent things we might recognize in life. Let's all have fun, learn from one another, and ENJOY what we do.

Some photos work well, and others don't. I wish I could post it on here but I have one I did of a friend that came out Perfect. I wish all of them came out that way.
