Welcome to RetouchPRO, John. Probably the most recommended book on restoration/retouching is "Restoration and Retouching" (or "Retouching and Restoration") by Katrin Eismann. She has 2 versions out now. Make sure you get the latest. They're excellent books that are easy to follow.

Ed,

Thanks for the information on Katrin's book. I'm currently restoring some civil war and late 1890's photo's. The civil war photo's need a great deal of restoration. With all the rain in Oregon I can't hardly wait to get an take some photo's in the sunlight.

Again, thanks for taking the time to provide the info.

Actually, the latest edition of Katrin's book is the 3rd edition which is also current with the latest version of Photoshop (CS2). It is well worth the money (IMO).

In addition to Katrin Eismann's book being an exceptional learning tool (she has a website with most of the example images available for download so you can work alongside the lesson), she is an extremely helpful and thoughtful person. She promptly answers her own e-mails and is very genuine and extremely nice when it comes to answering questions.

Best of all - you get to see some of my work - pages 135 and 321, as well as an example in her user gallery on her website. And to think all I did was ask her a question - she peeked at my website and asked me to contribute.

Good luck!

Hi,
I just got an email from Katrin on Sunday. I was surprised how quickly she anwsered my email. I purchased her book on Restoration and Retouching 3rd edition yesterday from Amazon. I'm in the process of ungrading my Photoshop 5 to Photoshop CS2. I'm been working with Elements 4.

I have already looked at your web site. Great!!!

Thanks for you help.
