I discovered a relatively easy method to create professional level artwork in Painter IX.

To see a large version of my Tiger painting click HERE (http://www.retouchpro.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/4493/size/big/sort/1/cat/500)

The first attachement below is the scanned imaged of an old color copy of a tiger picture I've had for over 10 years. I scanned it into Photoshop at 200dpi. The second is a detail from the painting. The third is is the same detail with a Rust Flake texture added in Photoshop.

My method:
In Photoshop I ran the Cutout filter and then repainted the eyes. I saved the image as a jpeg at level 10 quality.

In Painter IX I:
Created a blank layer above the image.
Checked the "Pick Up Underlying Color" box above the new layer.
Under Acrylics I selected the Captued Bristle brush.
Opacity at 30%
Resat at 0%
Bleed at 36%
Jitter at 0%
Brush Size: 8.5 and smaller as needed.

Using a Wacom Tablet I used a very light touch with the pen and carefully stroked the areas of color paying close attention to the direction of my strokes. I saved as a high quality jpeg and then used Smart Sharpen in Photoshop. I completed this painting in about 3 hours. Try this and you should be able to produce similar results. Good luck.

You are welcome to use the original image and try this yourself.

the tiger picture is one of those that you could do 50 or 100 renditions, love every one of them, but then look at the original and go, 'why bother?'. it's such a striking image all by itself.

nonetheless, i had a go with it. this started out as a smudge and went haywire. to 'save' it, i added about 5 new layers, 2 new images based on that, and altered blend modes till i ran out of ram :)
