Please don't ask how (so many steps that I doubt I could duplicate it exactly; probably could duplicate the look though). I did start out using EmbossWork's Ice White to start things off. Blended in the sky blue (Cyan) too. :)

You probably had to shoot this fast, as it looks too inviting to last long.

great picture, wonderful colors.

used my new 32 band gray with a blend mode of softlight, a bit of smudging and erasing to tweak.

GREAT photo and great photo for playing with. I had so much fun with this one, tried all sorts of things before I got to here. Enjoy.

Compression took a huge toll on this one. Imagine ok. Thanks.

Janet, I imagined the best. This is Studio Artisit 'flat region paint'.

Kiska, you are getting so very good at Studio Artist. I really like this one. It is bold, colorful, and a bit abstract. Great work.

Well i tried the cutout plugin on the psp7 program on this picture to see how it would look then i added a canvas texture, not impressed really, as the cutout on Photoshop does it better, but its a okish picture i think!

Yummy photo, PhotoMaster!

Wow, Craig. Love all the yellows!

Ikroll, very interesting effect. I like it!

Steve, Great job. Very subtile and effective!

Janet, I don't think I've ever seen "Craq" applied so subtily! Very old world look

Nice Kiska, especially like the cropping.
---------------
I tried something different. I used "Select Color" to pick the highlights, midtones and shadows. I coppied each selection to it's own layer and applied a different Artistic filter to each, then mergered them all into a single layer.

Took a snapshot then created a "Paper" texture layer for the background then painted back with the history brush from the merged textures layer. I ran the texture filter one more time on the painted layer and faded that back about 50%.

boy, two 'wows' from one post. i'm gonna have to go back and figure out what i did :) thanks legacy and thanks dee dee :)

i do recall that when i applied the brush strokes to get those streaking effects, that i was a bit surprised at what it did. i had expected more damage to the fruit. i [i]think[/] what happened is that i had several layers on and i was dragging from a lower layer...mostly. this left the fruit mostly intact on the upper layer but the colors derive from the nearby fruits.

and dee dee, i like that texture. sort of looks like it might have been painted on white, painted wood. very nice :)

Nice work, everybody.

This was a nifty image to muck about with. I got a dark, subdued Old Masters kind of vibe from it so that's the direction I headed. I replaced the bg, futzed with color and hue/sat, and ddid some dodging and burning in Photoshop CS2, painted it into Gertrdudis Pro and went back to Photoshop for texture.

Thanks to Photomaster for the pic.

Hi,
Here's my version, done with a mixture of Redwater's technique, Nik's Pastel, Impressionist and a faint outline on top.

my grandfather used to use a jar similar to this to make what he called brandied fruit. as a kid i wasnt allowed to have very much because of the alcohol that the fruit produced as it fermented but we were allowed to have a little bit ( very little and no where near what we wanted ) on ice cream . unfortunately my grandfather passed on taking his recipe with him. he is the inspiration for my version of this image

I am working on writing a set of artistic filters and thought I would share some preliminary results. I am curious what you guys/gals think. I have been struggling with trying to figure out what makes a pastel image. I think the influence of the canvas and lack of full coverage (unlike oil painting) is part of it, as well as having slightly different colors. Here are two images. One is supposed to look like an oil painting, the other a pastel drawing... can you tell which is which, and are they convincing? Thanks for your input..

Swampy
04-10-2006, 01:02 PM
I'm not an artist, but to me a pastel color is one that has been desaturated, or in the case of paints, white added.

If you are painting in Photoshop and want pastel colors use the Saturation ramp in the color picker (The "S" of the H/S/B buttons). By default, Photoshop defaults to the H ramp.

Below is a very saturated Blue selected from the H ramp. To the right, the same HUE of blue selected from the lower portion of the Saturation (S) ramp.

Just to clear up some semantic confusion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastels

There are pastels, and then there are pastels.

And thanks, PM, for the kind words.

Yep, I am trying to simulate the pastel art media... but, I did do a bit of desaturation and brightening in order to convey some of the "pastel" colors typically used in pastel art...

Very nice picture. Just smoothed it a bit by applying a gaussian blur to a multiply overlay (ofcourse had to adjust the lighting after that), and added a border

C&C was a bit harsh in highs and low, so I manually Smudged a bit.
One texture in highs/lows, different texture in midtones.

yup, but more depressed than fruity. mother is in the hospital and may not make it out. she's a remarkable woman. 85 years old, 4 heart surgerys in the last 10 years (one experimental), several skin cancer surgerys in the last 30 years, diabetes, chronic leukemia, and now a persistent lung infection which may stem from tuberculosis she had when she was 5 and from a very weakened immune system, and gave birth to and raised 8 kids. she has 31 grandkids and 4 great-grandkids with a 5th on the way.

so, yesterday was a bit of a creative explosion, one to take my mind off things and two to take my mind off things.

and thank you :) fun stuff. i originally was looking for my insect tubes but hit on these and liked them. i shld dress it up a bit more with some jungle stuff. would also be fun to animate a bit... have the elephant move a peach or something :)
