I need to have this image printed as an 8x10 tomorrow....When I do an 8x10 crop in photoshop it pixelates and looks pretty bad. Is there a way to smooth this out so it would look good in an 8x10 size? thanks

P.S. I guess pixels basically need to be added?

My guess is: this image doesn't have enough resolution to support 8 x 10
It is just to small for that. That is my guess...

I understand this is a small image and it would require some doing... But this is all I have to work with and I need to make it the best it can be for an 8x10 crop. This is why I figured I would come to the experts (here) for some tips.

Could you rescan the image? Or is this all you have?

If this image is all you have, try converting it to 300DPI and then resizing it.
It might help somewhat...

Just remember, if you don't have the pixels you can't expect miracles :-)

I have a larger image here that I created using that technique. I also adjusted the shadows and highlights a bit.

That does seem alot smoother. Thanks for doing that. Do you think if I blurred the background it would help?

Hi there

Will it will not be a great print but better than nothing. I used to increase size 10 percent at a time until I reached the size I wanted but with the new Bicubic settings you can usually get fair results going up all at once. I usually use the opposite of what they recommend and use sharper going up to about 10 percent over... then back down after the first sharpen to the final 8 by 10 using sharper again. Sometimes you will be better off applying a gaussian blur say 4.5 pixels or so then selectively bringing back the eyes and mouth with a mask.

Looks good.... amazing what lightening the eyes will do.

All that Frank said plus I'd recommend using the "bicubic smoother" for the image resampling setting.

As I am fairly new to this too, I was wondering what if it were printed out as it is now, ensuring it is a clean and clear copy...then have it scanned again? Would this work?

I enlarged your photo using Genuine Fractals. It didn't come out as 8 x 10 since the proportion of the original did not allow for that, but the result is pretty amazing.

Wow, I will have to look into genuine fractals.

Thanks for the tip Swampy!
