Arrr, ye lubbers, I be submittin' this yere paintin' and any man Jack who don't like it can walk the bloody plank, he can. Hyarrrr.

(My attempt to do it all with the AHB pretty much stunk so I laid a partly-transparent layer of Impressionist over it. I'm still not that crazy about it. Arrr.)

Almost had as much fun given this rendering a title as the rendering itself :lmao: . A mixture of the following: Flaming Pear's Mr. Contrast, Impressionist with CherylH's Finger Paint 1 preset, Xero's Pastellize set to divide (gave it some glow), GIMP's Photo Copy filter (for the hair only; gave the stands some much needed separation), and some other things (i.e., smudgeing, reverse painting, saturation/color adjustments, etc. ). :)

Forgot to add that I used Eye Candie's Jiggle too. :wavey:

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum - except it is Sunday morning and mother's day and I would not want to shock my conservative sons!
Done in Photoshop with paint daubs and a new background.

I'm having almost as much fun artifying these as I did taking them.

I've added one I tried to do in Painter. Sadly, I've been away from Painter too long and most of this was done in Photoshop after the fact.

Now where's the Rum?
Following your lead, Ikroll I entered Captain Morgans resposible drinking website and found this interesting "recipe" for a Tattoo - using bold spiced black rum and and an energy drink. Sounds quite good and maybe what the energizer bunny drinks.
Pretty cool site.

Combination of an upper and downer means that the alcohol must be canceled out and you can drink as much as you want; Right?

Margaret, I like your rendering  it has very nice painterly look.

Gary, your idea is great, I like it
is a part of your rendering the coast near La Digue ? Those big rockpieces are for sure
from granite, I think there is only one place on earth with islands from granite .. :hat:

Hi Barbara,

I've no idea where the island in my picture is from, it's just an image I "trawled" off the net and cropped to get the frame I wanted.

Glad you liked the final image, I had loads of fun doing it, and added and subtracted all sorts of things before settling on the final submission.

Hi Verywierd,

Your ship is flying the white ensign (flag of the Royal Navy), is this a ruse to lure unsuspecting souls into a Pirate trap ?

The ship is actually a model of the Golden Hind. As a Privateer all who sailed on her were both representatives of the Crown as well as pirates (to the Spanish) :)

Not really happy, but I need to figure out the sketch. I'll keep playing until I can simulate it. In the meantime, here's what I've come up with. :)

Used Xero's Carravaggio filter along with some additional enhancements (including Impressionist with KentC's Cezanne filte modified for size) to get this illustration. :)

Wonderful shot, Janet. When I saw the first one, I immediately knew what I was going to do:

- Cut him out of the background, and turned him into a sketch.
- Created a "pirate map" background. I started with a great action called "Ray's Parchment 2006", which is available at Adobe's Studio Exchange:

http://tinyurl.com/fmgur

After running the action, I ran another great action, "Parahamsa Linen":

http://tinyurl.com/memf5

Then I used lots of grunge/stain type brushes to add some dirt and age. You can find tons of these brushes online or at Studio Exchange.

I also added a 1626 map of Bermuda and a few nautical/antique designs. All of these were used at varying opacities and blend modes. Finally, I brushed the edge with grunge brushes to give an uneven/burned/torn/aged look.

To finish I placed the pirate on top of the map, put in a drop shadow and tweaked all the colors. Now if only I can learn how to retouch as fast as I've written this description! ; )

Great photos Janet. Thanks for sharing them.
I gathered some background images and collaged them together using different blending modes. Then I Buzzed it and added some grain texture. Some dodge and burn finished it off.

If you look carefully at a spirit label, you'll find it says "degree" proof, not "percent" proof.

Or the more modern notation is for example (37% vol).

But aside from my incredibly petty nitpicking, I loved your picture Frank, as indeed I enjoyed Cathy's terrific interpretation.

Really, really interesting technique Steve. I can't decide if it is a cross between stained glass and embossing of some sort. Mind sharing the steps. I'm dying to copy it and add my own touches.

Captain Morgan didn't quite like the idea of posing...
Fortunately the painter almost finished the work before his tragic death by captain's sword.

You all are so much more creative with these pictures than I could be. Thank you for sharing and doing. I hope everyone is having a grand ole time with the pirates.

And yes, pavel, they would make a great comic book series. When I took their pictures, they were easily the most unhibited and photo friendly of the whole renaissance fair.

Hi all...Thought I'd try another, still trying to get the hang of Painter, I've come to the conclution that you need to make bold strokes with brushes, then blend them in later. (I think!) By the way the pic loses a lot by shrinking it down to 100k........(that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!!)..

John.. I agree with Pavel...I think the second one is great...you are doing really well...i am trying to get to grips with it too and enjoying the experience....I tend to do a muck up ...big stokes and then bring details back with a smaller brush and a soft blender...I also like the just add water for portrait photos i find them great for the skin..but we all get into our own style of painting....Today i downloaded a CD of brushes i got with Jeremy Suttons book...Painter IX Creativity...they are brilliant and the book is so helpful and written in an easy to undersatnd way....I need that...
Good luck ..most of all enjoy...
