This pic needs help with the lighting and the torn spots. They are brother and sister and both died in 1924.

Hope you don't mind me asking but where are they from? This is a long shot but they couldn't be from Kenton-on-Sea in South Africa could they. The only Butts I know farmed in that area and owned what is now modern day Kenton.

I cropped the white margin and later added it back in.

I used the color mixer adjustment layer with grey output and green + red channel input because the blue channel seemed to have the most distortion.

I used a levels adjustment layer and used a gradient on the mask to correct the lighter right side of the photo more so than the left.

I used the healing and cloning brush and blurring for the scratches

I added a sepia color back in

Looks real good Phil.
Your steps will help me out as a PRACTICE more.

I removed the wrinke with Photoshop CS2's Healing brush.

I used the luminosity channel to start. Then used levels and a lot of healing brush and cloning.

Selective blur here and there to reduce the artifacts and blend. Then added a tone and increased contrast with sharpening.

John and Janie are from Arkansas. They are my grandmothers half sister and brother. I have been doing my family tree and ran across this photo. They both died in Feb. of 1920 5 days apart. Janie at 18 and John at 21.

this is my standard clone, push, airbrush with a border added. somewhere in there was a digi noise removal and then a Fast Fix to lower the sepia effect.

Love your use of light Craig. You managed to even out the exposure perfectly. I had a go at this one too. Mainly used the healing brush and the patch tool to fix up the cracks etc. I then copied that and shifted the copy one pixel to the right and set the layer mode to darken to get rid of some of the smaller scratches. It could do with some more cloning on the clothes and it is a bit on the dark side but there you have it. Craig how did you even out that exposure so well. This is one of my weak points and a problem that comes up time and time again with old photos, especially ones that have been partially exposed to the sun.

one thing i forgot to mention i did was the clarify filter. i think that's what you're looking for. it handles contrasting nicely without reddening or raising the luminance like a brighness/contrast layer can do at times. i think bart hickman knows what the photoshop equivalent is to that filter. i use psp 10.

and like you, i could have put more time in on the clothing also, especially the woman's. i think that dress has a nice pattern to it, but there's so much dirt on the image that it's hard to bring it out and clean it without ruining the pattern.

i'm also interested in arknsawer's attempts on these images. she's posted a few now but i dont see attempts by her posted.
