View Full Version : a nice image from pdphoto.org Kraellin 05-17-2006, 09:05 PM pdphoto.org is an image sharing/hosting type site. many of the images there are posted with no restrictions on others using them. i was scouring around there the other day and pulled a few for my stock. this was one of them. i did carefully check that it was listed as no restrictions on others using it, even for commercial use, so it shld be fine for use here. in fact, the 'pd' of 'pdphoto' means 'public domain'.
no particular challenge intended here. just a nice image to have some fun with.
i added my normal 'tag' on the image file name just to distinguish it from the original file on my harddrive. just eliminate the -1-k-1 from the file name and you have the original file name.
craig Steve Conway 05-18-2006, 08:51 AM Here's an attempt with several layers of everything from Impressionist to Buzz.
Steve patriciakay 05-18-2006, 11:33 AM Hello Craig..nice picture...
Nice one Steve, like how all the details stand out...
Mostly done in photoshop with the oil art history brush...frame from alien skin..
Patricia :dizzy: Swampy 05-18-2006, 05:25 PM Craig, nice picture. It looks like it should be a still life in the impressionist style. :-)
I went about this in a different way.
1. Duplicate the layer, add a curves AL and lightened up the whole thing. Merged down.
2. Ran Filter->Brush Strokes->Ink Outlines. I ran this probably three time or until it was one step beyond "good" and faded the last application back until I liked it.
3. Sponge Filter to blotto it up a little.
Add frame and signature...done.
It's so much fun to experiment with new techniques and I'm finding that some of the more subtile filters, when run more than once or twice, give some nice effects.
Thanks for the play. :-) Mitch 05-18-2006, 06:02 PM Great picture Craig, and three great versions already.
Steve - Loads of detail, great woodblock effect.
Patricia - Loved the border!
Swampy - I love the impressionists. You can almost feel the sunshine.
I tried for an oil painting here.
Gertrudis - small oil brush. Then into -
Deep Paint - bump and shine turned on. Lighting adjusted in deep paint.
Regards to all,
Mitch. lkroll 05-18-2006, 07:43 PM Well, this one's (http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/465/boise1bg0831031k10pc.jpg) better at showing what I was trying to achieve. Maybe harddrive space will get cheap enough for us to upload larger file size one day. :) kiska 05-19-2006, 04:12 AM Thanks for the link, kraelin!
Done in SA after cropping. Steve Conway 05-19-2006, 09:03 AM Hey!...that's a nice one! Really like those brush strokes.
Is my mind going, or am I not remembering what SA is?
Steve
Thanks for the link, kraelin!
Done in SA after cropping. Steve Conway 05-19-2006, 09:09 AM For Mitch and Patriciakay: thanks.
Mitch, it does take on a bit of woodblock style. Wasn't my objective, but I'll take what I can get. 8-)
Steve kiska 05-19-2006, 10:26 AM Thanks Steve. SA = Studio Artist, a paint program for mac only, right now.
http://www.synthetik.com/ Steve Conway 05-19-2006, 11:36 AM Thanks...I know my mind is going, but couldn't put the letters SA together with anything I have used.

http://www.synthetik.com/ Kraellin 05-19-2006, 03:01 PM you guys are just too good :) and you're welcome for the pic and the link. i just wish it were my picture to begin with.
steve,
i like that look. one of these days i'm going to have to try out buzz.
patricia,
i like the soft blurred look there. you also seem to have done something with the lighting. nice.
dee dee,
dont know what you'd call that look, but i like the great mix of warm tones there. you shld experiment more; you're good at it :)
mitch,
also a soft blur effect, but you've changed the lighting even more. nice! it has an old classic feel to it.
lk,
a bit more reds than i'd go with, but it certainly does pop.
kiska,
interesting crop and i love the strong brush strokes there. very nice :)
craig barbara 05-19-2006, 05:40 PM I used Gimp
and just played with settings.. Kraellin 05-20-2006, 12:36 AM barbara,
also a strong, warm picture. very nice :)
craig Verywierd 05-20-2006, 09:19 AM Kinda charcoal and crayon effect done on Photoshop. Kraellin 05-20-2006, 09:51 AM verywierd,
i like what you did with the lighting contrasts here. nice colors as well. well done :)
craig Peter S 05-20-2006, 03:03 PM Nice pic, hope I've done it justice lkroll 05-20-2006, 06:15 PM Well that was the result of this rendering anyway. :lmao:
Since Craig didn't like my interpretation in red, I thought I might earn a reprieve. Used many things, but I used Paint Engines Arctic preset for the brushstroke work. :)
:wavey: Kraellin 05-20-2006, 10:28 PM peter s,
i like that. got a nice thick paint look. how'd you get that?
lk,
oh boy, i think i'm in that area of where if i say anything it's going to be like answering 'did you quit shooting your wife yet?' ;) they're both fine :)
craig Peter S 05-21-2006, 02:55 PM i like that. got a nice thick paint look. how'd you get that?
Craig - Sorry can't tell you, it has to remain a secret between me and Vitual Painter. DOH shouldn't have said that.
Well not all that plug in's work, I faded the results a little and tweaked levels and desaturated parts that didn't look right.
Peter Kraellin 05-21-2006, 03:06 PM thanks, peter :)
