I'm not sure if this type of thing is considered photo-art and I apologize if I have misunderstood the concept.

I'm graduating this weekend and saw your very pretty flowers and immediately thought that I would love to have one to wear in my hair (being that you're across the pond I think this would be impossible :P) so I trotted out the ole photoshop to play...

After using masks to composite the flower into a pic of me, I added a shadow, and spent a ton of time trying to make it look realistic. Then I decided to play with various filters/art-history brush (totally making all the time I spent on realism unnecessary, d'oh) and came up with this. Thanks for sharing the great photo. :pleased:

Steve might not be "new and inventive" but very nice

Oltenius weird (please don't be offended ) but attractive

irshgrlkc seems like photo art to me and very inventive ( what we like) and yes i could see it being worn in the hair but your umbrella would get in the way here ! ! ! ! ! !

Hi Palms....Lovely photos...new camera is looking good!!! Are your clematis early??? I have a dark blue one but it doesnt flower till August!!!

Palms,Steve,Swampy and Janet...lovely, all the different renditions...

Irshgrlkc...Unusual use of Palms photo....good idea...I like it!

Oltenius....Yours is also unusual but I also like it...Its fun to try different ways with your art!!! The second one I like too!!

I did mine in Photoshop CS2 with the art history brush ( getting to grips with it a bit more now) I then put Flaming Pears Aetherize plugin on it..to change the look a little!!!

Thanks for the pic Palms...

This question reminds me of a story...

Someone once asked Ted Koppel while pointing to his head:
Is that your hair?

And the answer, as the story goes, was:
Absolutely! I paid 500 bucks for it so it is all mine!

So, my answer to your question:
Yes I did push the button that ran Digital Anarchy Backdrop Designer that generated the background. :-)

Frank, Nice drape. Do it yourself?

Frank, a button push, huh? Still a great effect in your overall design no matter how you came about it. (He's so good, I half expected him to say he used a radial blur and a lighting effect)

Thought I would pass on this wc vector simplication to you and all. Attached is a lower quality crop; here's (http://img321.imageshack.us/img321/3214/clematis2yr.jpg) the full high quality rendering. :)

palms,

thanks :)

filter forge is in beta. i signed up and was approved. this was from a post by doug nelson in the software forum. at first you could only get the download by signing up. now, i'm not sure. some seem to have gotten it without signing up. but, if you dont sign up for the beta then the demo is a trial, time limited version which runs out in 30 days.

but, these guys are doing some good things. if you get the demo and submit 3 filters and they are approved, you get the full, registered version for free. i think the beta testers may get a free version also, but not real sure of that. but it is the normal exchange for helping them get a release version.

so, yes, i do recommend it. it's very powerful yet very simple to use and the list of approved filters is growing. by the time of release you're going to be getting a good program with a LOT of already made filters. the developers seem very concientious and responsive. the program is very stable already and the developers seem very dedicated to making this a long term commitment. so, even if you never make a filter yourself, you're going to get a bunch of pre-made ones.

and yes, i am getting the hang of it :) but you shld see what some of the others are doing with this thing. it's really quite amazing! byRo and cameraken have both signed up also and we were told that there are 1200 registered testers now. not sure when they're going to stop taking applications or if they have already.

and just one last note on this. making a filter is as much fun as making an art rendition here on these forums, except when you make a filter you get 50 renditions :)

palms,

i'm in the 'wow' mode also. FF is just blowing me away and this is just the beta. i've been using the 'clematis' image to test my filters and every once in a while i save one out. i have over 20 so far that i've liked well enough to save. and, having just made another filter, there are more to come :)

i also just downloaded a filter off the forums. this one adds over 10,000 lens effects all in the one filter. this thing is what all of us non-coder type folks have been looking for. attached is just one effect.

Now i am doing a little hijacking Palms...but you have to download filter forge ...i have just had a play for half an hour and its great and highly addictive (right again Craig) Love the comic book one...

Craig ...I like your fist one best...It glows...think you should start a filter forge thread and post a pic and see what we can do with it????? PLEASE...

Patricia... :pleased:

Kraellin
06-07-2006, 07:58 AM
well good. i really dont want to take over the thread :)

palms,
try it, the faded sketch layer. heck, try any of them. one of the things i always thought might be interesting here on retouch was a derivative thread. someone posts an image and others do a rendition then others do a rendition off the rendition and so on down the line.

patricia,
careful, it's highly addictive! there shld be a warning label on that thing ;) and yes, if you never even make a filter yourself there are some great filters that come with the program and more get uploaded every day. byRo just made one that pretty much blew us all away. i dont know if it's on the download or not, but once you have the program you can download the others through the built-in feature of FF. so, find Ro's 'adaptive tiling' filter and try it out. if you cant get it through the server you can get it off the forums over there.

and thank you both for the kind words and encouragement. i always feel a bit inhibited in posting more than a few pics in a thread. i've already done over 30 versions of 'clematis' and will continue to do more, as it's sort of become my test picture for filter forge. but i certainly wont be posting all of them. folks would get pretty tired of 'craig's filter forged clematis' i would think.

craig

edit: and yes, patricia, i had thought of starting a filter forge thread and may do so. i just have to find an appropriate image. we've also suggested the devs start a gallery on their site for this sort of thing.

patriciakay
06-07-2006, 09:03 AM
A thread would be great Craig....can i help with a photo...what are you looking for??? Just got to congratulate you on your filter at ff, HSL contrast manipulation...it has done wonderful things to my roses!!!! Thanks...

Once again...sorry Palms ...just had to reply to Craig......

Patricia... :)

Kraellin
06-07-2006, 12:52 PM
patricia,

oh good. i'm glad to see someone using it! try Ro's sketch filter and the adaptive tiling one too. i've made some more filters and am working on a new one as well, but the submission line right now tends to get clogged up. they're working on speeding it up. so when that happens i'll be posting some more.

and if you want to start a thread yourself, it might work better. i'm still cleaning up my old photo negatives and dont have a decent enough digital camera to take new ones yet. so, that might work better. not sure how we would do it, though. i wouldnt really want to try to exclude those that dont have FF yet. but it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to it, that instead of the thread being dedicated to one photo, it would be dedicated to one program with many different photos.
