It is surprising how little difference there is in skin color… maybe that should tell us something.

I would think just putting a darker color over the skin would not look correct. There are subtle differences in general structure and hair that put together are important for realism.

That said I just applied tones I sampled from a black man using a gradient map and inversing the mask then painting in.

Butch did a great job changing the shin color. And just in case, you were being literal when you mentioned black, that change is possible too.
Hue / Saturation adjustment layers work well for these changes. Also add a solid color layer above the background and change the blend mode to color. A layer mask would then be applied and you would just need to brush over the areas that you wnated affected.
Replace Color command in PS also works well for these changes. There are many other ways.

Best way is to sample a range of colors from an image that has the skin tones you wish to copy. Create swatches from darkest to lightest with maybe 6 - 8 steps in between.

Apply swatches to a gradient map and mask to just affect the skin.

Although I did a horrendous job, perhaps you can get reasonable results by duplicating your background then Image:Adjustments: Invert and change to Luminosity. Try using Blend If to bring some info from above and below and painting back on a grey overlay layer everything except the skin.

This is more pakistan/india tone than, I think you were going for a more Jamaican look but it just didnt suit him - but you can use this method to go as dark as you like.
I basically just used curves to select a point on the skin and change the input values to the original skin colour and the output to that of a black man I samples - roughly 44, 75, 75, 65 for CYMK output, then masked the skin in. It was too dark for my liking so I think altered the curve by selecting the mid point and moving it towards the bottom right corner a little, till I was happy with the skin tone.

Here is my take on it.
i did 2 overlay layer 1 color layer and some masking

A little darker.

I gave this a quick go while I was eating. If I have more time later or tomorrow I'll try to finish it.

What I did:

Multiply layers with masks to darken the skin
Color balance to get more realistic skin tones
Soft light layers to lighten eyes and lips a little


What still needs to be done:

Make the lips thicker
Make the nose wider
Change the jaw structure to make it more realistic
Even out the tones across the face
Match the skin tones numbers with tones of black people


White people with black skin even if the color is spot on will always look either indian, pakistani or weird. You will need to change the bone structure of the face to achieve a good result. This reminds me of the movie White chicks...

I'd be more inclined to make him of mixed racial heritage so that you don't have to change the red pigments in the skin.

I duped layer, set blend mode to multiply, masked to keep the effect on the face only .... brought back the eyes, lips and eyebrows on the face. From there I jusr fiddled around till I liked it. Used dodge and burn tools in the eye area.

I used combination of match colors & multiply layers.

I changed the features a little and colorized. Stripped the background of color to enhance the face.

Came to review the thread and noticed that I spilled some paint onto the white head cover, oops.

here's my attempt.

Background copy= softlight_73%, Hue/Sat-lightness -100
Layer 2 = softlight_79%, Hue/Sat-lightness -100
