View Full Version : Simply flowers... patriciakay 06-21-2006, 02:27 PM Here is a photo i took earlier today of Aquilegia...known as columbine too...i think...
Its quite simple but i thought you all would like to play.....
Patricia.... :)
More flowers came out on Thursday.... patriciakay 06-21-2006, 02:42 PM This one i did in Photoshop CS2 with the water color art history brush and then a watercolor smudge brush....I brightened it up with levels...
Patricia.... ahutton 06-21-2006, 04:01 PM First one in a long time. I first used Paint Shop Pro and ran noise filter, then enhance edges. Then I did a VP triangles set at all subtle, then Impressionist. Finally I removed some more noise.
The second one is a sort of watercolor effect using Paint Shop Pro and xero lineart drawing with no outlining.
Amy patriciakay 06-21-2006, 04:13 PM Hi Amy..
Lovely painting...I like the vp triangles....but could you please tell me where i can find them??? Imressionist worked well too...
Patricia... ahutton 06-21-2006, 04:21 PM Thanks...the triangles are a filter in virtual painter. patriciakay 06-21-2006, 05:38 PM Amy the water color painting is really lovely...delicate...
Patricia... johnnieB 06-21-2006, 06:41 PM patricia, what a beautiful flower.
after many color adjustments and a couple of filters, i attempted my first "smudge" piece -- i can see where this can be a very addictive process -- i had to stop myself :lmao: .
thanks for the beautiful image to work on. Steve Conway 06-21-2006, 07:33 PM Brought out the subject a little...punched up the color a little...softened it a little. Then I added a dumb little dull black frame.
Steve palms1 06-22-2006, 05:24 AM Nice photo's again Patricia are they from your garden ? like your watercolour
Amy great effect with triangles and nice watercolour
johnnieb yes smudging is addictive and great effect for your first
steve great colours wished i could of got them
here's my two attempts a smudge and a sketch effect
Palms
p.s. is it a british thing but the common name for columbine's here is Granny's bonnet Swampy 06-22-2006, 05:39 AM Had to have a go at this one. Lovely flowers.
Took the original into Adobe Illustrator CS2 and did a live trace and posterized down to 13 colors. Brought the result back into Photoshop and rasterized the vector (Smart Object). Did just a touch of smudge on some of the petals to reduce glaring posterization areas. New background, frame and signature. palms1 06-22-2006, 05:42 AM thougt i would try another one before lunch using the ahb this time, I was just going to send this to the bin when i had another look and thought mmm i quite like this so added a edge layer and hay presto one messy looking ahb that i like enough to know i will be spending most the afternoon trying to copy again ( should be doing housework )
Palms manta1900 06-22-2006, 06:17 AM All you needed was more exposure.... Fortunatelly I have created the right filter for your case! lkroll 06-22-2006, 08:32 AM thougt i would try another one before lunch using the ahb this time, I was just going to send this to the bin when i had another look and thought mmm i quite like this so added a edge layer and hay presto one messy looking ahb that i like enough to know i will be spending most the afternoon trying to copy again ( should be doing housework )

I really like this Japanese Water Color effect Palms. I was trying to simulate this effect, but gave up. I know, I know. I need a Wacom. lol
You all know that I get challenged with the simulation side (even though it can take longer then just doing it by hand; lol). :) oltenius 06-22-2006, 10:19 AM Only 19% quality because the size of the file. Nice flowers, Patricia... palms1 06-22-2006, 11:49 AM Thanks Ikroll
no you dont need a wacom or pen tool ( they are helpful but not necessity ) just a ahb let me know if you want to know more
Palms patriciakay 06-22-2006, 01:49 PM Great pics you are all producing....
JohnnieB.....Love the color of you first smudge piece...welcome to the smudge addiction...
Steve....Your flower color is lovely and bright and i think the black frame finishes it of a treat!!!!
Palms.....The flowers are from my garden...i really like them and have them in a few colors...Grannys bonnets...yes i remember from when i was a child....
Three lovely ones from you.....like em all but my fave is the AHB one...I love it and am hoping you can give me a tute for it???
Swampy...Really beautiful...co ordinating colors, the frame and the texture...
will have to have a go your way and see what happens!!!
Manta1900....Thanks for the exposure correction...saw how dark it was this morning....
Oltenius....Love how you have done your picture, the colorful shadow effect is great and the framing too....will try and sort my file size problem out as soon as possible...
Patricia..... :pleased: oltenius 06-22-2006, 02:41 PM Patricia, thanks for your kindliness :wavey: Janet Petty 06-22-2006, 08:59 PM Patricia, these flowers are so very lovely. I don't think I have ever seen purplish/blue columbines (and isn't one a daffodil?) before. They make quite a beautiful statement.
Thanks for sharing them. And thanks to all who have contributed. This thread is producing some amazingly beautiful work.
Janet Kraellin 06-22-2006, 09:26 PM filter forge, image borrowing 1, a bit of a distortion.
and thanks, patricia. lovely flowers :)
craig johnnieB 06-22-2006, 09:32 PM patriciakay and palms1, thank you for the kind words.
and patricia thank you for the new flower image -- i'm going back to my newest "smudge" addiction for this one -- will post results soon.
thanks for the beautiful photo! Kraellin 06-22-2006, 09:58 PM frozen in ice, from another filter forge filter.
craig Kraellin 06-22-2006, 10:56 PM no filter forge this time. this is a bit of a smudge. i used a sarshair smudge on several layers, duplicated the layers and blurred the dupes, some more than once. there were some blends in there and a copy merge and a very heavy digital camera noise removal. on top of all that i added a contrast/lighten adjustment layer and another copy merge/paste as new layer. on the new layer i did an illumination.
i might have missed something in there. there were 20 layers.
craig johnnieB 06-22-2006, 11:34 PM know when to say when !!! lol :dizzy:
i need some sleep, but i had to post this first -- my second smudge attempt.
the colors in this photo were absolutely beautiful patriciakay -- thanks again! patriciakay 06-23-2006, 02:09 AM I am happy you all like my photos and glad i decided to post the second one..
Janet.....I love this flower...its so delicate even in the darker colors.....there are many colors and varieties...I have a plum colored one..so different from the ones posted ....its like a pom pom...Two more still to flower and i think one is a pale yellow....will get a little gallery together and post the link here...no daffs Janet...havent had any in my garden for three weeks now...we are about a month behind with flowering owing to sub zero temperatures in winter...believe me i am surprised every year when all my plants pop out of the frozen earth!!!!
Your painting is really lovely and i like the blue mottled background.... :bigthmb:
Craig....Ah the magic of filter forge....you are doing amazing things with it...Frozen ice is my fave of those two...will check it out later in the day...But your smudge is really beautiful and mystical...cant stop looking at it...Mr Craig.....you are one talented guy...
JohnnieB...I can see you are getting well into smudging and i really like your picture...think you are doing great...Who needs sleep anyway...when you can smudge the night away???? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Lyle....where is yours???????
Patricia..... Steve Conway 06-23-2006, 10:06 AM Heck! I thought my frame might be pretty puny fior them nice flowers.
Thanks Patricia.
Steve

i could work on this image forever, it is truly beautiful! Swampy 06-23-2006, 05:45 PM oltenius... Thank you for the flowers! :-) patriciakay 06-24-2006, 02:40 AM Steve.... I think simple black frames are sooooo useful and sometimes all a picture needs to finish it off...
JohnnieB...Think we all need a bit of encouragement at times....Love your second version of the columbines...smudged beautifully with a perfect frame...
Here are a couple of links to flowers i have posted before.....you might like to smudge them too....

johnnieb,
love the depth on those. well done!
palms,
also very lovely. is ahb part of cs2 or painter or both?
craig Kraellin 06-24-2006, 02:28 PM oh, and patricia, that ice one from filter forge is just part of another filter i havent released yet. but, when i saw your comments i decided it was time to make that effect a separate filter. it's now essentially done. i'm still hoping the next release of FF has more control components and i'm somewhat waiting for that to happen before i release some of these. also, the submission queue over there is currently broken. lol. so even if i wanted to upload it i couldnt :(
craig johnnieB 06-24-2006, 02:43 PM patricia, thanks again and thanks for the additional flower threads -- i'll be smudging for the rest of the weekend now lol -- if i have any success, i'll post them.
kraelin -- thanks too -- love your effects as well. Kraellin 06-24-2006, 02:57 PM johhnieb,
you're welcome.
and thank you :)
craig palms1 06-24-2006, 03:25 PM Thanks Craig the ahb is part of Photoshop i have version 7 Dosent Paint Shop Pro have it ? i know they didnt in 7 but thought they might of had the equilvelant now ?

Craig you asked me about an aluminium frame i used in another thread...i didnt make it it came in a zip...maybe i could zip it to you or try find it again on the internet...maybe i wont be able to????
Patricia.... Northernshadow 06-27-2006, 12:34 PM These are lovely flowers to work on Patricia
The watercolors are all beautiful,
Patricia, I especially like your first rendition
Palms love your ahb work! That one you were going to get rid of is WOW!
Janet I love how your background came out.
Swampy, hey! that frame, crop and colors work great!
Craig, I like what you did with the smudge, just enough detail left! the frozen filter looks excessivey cool,
Jonnie your smudge is lookin very painterly, I like the 2nd one best
Oltenius, I'm not crazy about your gold colored frame but I just love your painting! Thanks for the flowers!
Steve I think the frame is fine, anchors the flowers so they aren't floating away!
I did a chalk and charcoal
Like Craig I am having a lot of fun with Filter Forge. This is a filter I have submitted but haven't heard back on yet (hope they fix the submission problem soon!)
had to compress it a lot, hope it doesn't lose too much  lkroll 06-27-2006, 12:41 PM These are lovely flowers to work on Patricia

Regards patriciakay 06-27-2006, 03:29 PM Sherry...
Thankyou for your comments...
Love your painting...looks like you have sprinkled fairy dust on it!....
Patricia... :classic: Kraellin 06-27-2006, 04:49 PM Craig, I like what you did with the smudge, just enough detail left! the frozen filter looks excessivey cool, thank you :) i like yours as well. your water color filter or another?
i've got several FF filters i'm waiting to release till they fix the submission queue and do the next upgrade. mostly, i'm waiting for more control components. if and when we get that, i'll release quite a few, i hope.
craig Northernshadow 06-27-2006, 09:14 PM Thanks for the comments! :classic:
Craig, it was my filter.
a new one Chalk and Charcoal
I'm hoping for more control components too, ya know at first I thought they really wouldn't be necessary but now I need them!!! I'm looking forward to seeing your new filters, that program is just to fun to play with! Kraellin 03-01-2007, 09:25 PM well, my filter forge is down at the moment as i wait for a new license key. but, i did manage to do a few before that happened.
this one is from a filter forge filter by steviej. Peter S 03-02-2007, 03:01 AM A very metallic feel with that one Craig.
Went in a slightly different way myself, My first post after the op, so I didn't spend a long time on this really.
A very nice picture Patricia thanks for posting.
Peter Kraellin 03-02-2007, 07:26 AM thanks, peter. steviej's filter is called 'Cool Metal'.
i like yours as well. has some nice depth and texture. Kraellin 03-02-2007, 07:32 AM ok, this is probably not going to work very well due to the file size limits, but i ran your picture through a filter forge filter called 'stereogram' by richard bartlett. get out your 3d glasses folks! Kraellin 03-02-2007, 07:43 AM ok, here's another one you need 3d glasses for. this one is done in a filter forge filter called 'CF Anaglyph Basic Edition' by CFandM. if you dont know what an anaglyph is, do a google define: on it. it's very much like a stereogram.
and again, i hope the compression doesnt ruin this. notice the depth of the image relative to the page it's displayed on. and yes, i'm serious about the 3d glasses :) johnnieB 03-02-2007, 10:14 AM Kraelin, don't laugh, but I happen to have a pair of 3D glasses courtesy of the SI swimsuit issue -- lol -- both of your images look great! Kraellin 03-02-2007, 02:12 PM hehehe, SI included 3d glasses with the swimsuit issue? boy, i'll bet i'm missing something good there :)
there are some better examples of anaglyphs on the filterforge.com site, a couple of which are quite impressive.
oh, and thanks :) patriciakay 03-06-2007, 12:43 AM Craig and Peter...Love what you have one with my flowers....metallic i love and also your dark dramatic one Craig...Peter great....were you back on the computer immediately after your surgery??
Patricia... :pleased: Peter S 03-06-2007, 05:48 AM Peter great....were you back on the computer immediately after your surgery??
Patricia... :pleased:
If only, I wasn't allowed. Tried to sneak back but was strictly rationed to looking only. Started again, slowly, after about two days.
Peter Kraellin 03-06-2007, 11:53 PM thanks, patricia. always loved that original picture. |
