Hello, this may be the wrong forum but please help me anyways. im having a brain dump and can't remember the command/shortcut key where if you want to apply a new fill or adjustment layer but only want it to affect the layer direcly below and not to the whole layer stack.. Please:) Thank you.

Click on the line between the 2 layers to link them.

no that is not it. im talking about affecting change on only the link below it. for exaample. lets say i want i have a picture of 3 identical apples and had three layers. lets say i wanted to make the uppermost layer (the top) blue and leave the other the original color. i apply a hue saturation level but only want to affect the topmost layer. what is the short cut that will allow me to apply the layer only to the top.

Click on the line between the adjustment layer and the layer you want to affect to link them.

I think you'll need a layer mask . . . don't believe there's a shortcut per say.

no not a layer mask.....i understand masking.. im talking about let say you have a 10 layer stack and you want to make an hue adjustment only to that particular layer..nothing below it..nothing above it.. just to that particular layer.. i remember there used to be a key stroke i would hit in ps7 that would do it..

OK, found it . . . if you hold option (on a Mac) while holding your cursor between the two layers (adjustment and image layers), you'll get a linked circle icon and after you click, the adjustment layer will offset and only apply to the layer below it:

You could just press cmd+opt+G (Mac) or cntrl+alt+G (PC).

Or, in your case, you can just change the blend mode of the group layer to "normal". Then the adjustment only works through to the bottom of the group.

Just hold down the option key when you create a new adjustment layer and it will bring up a dialog box asking if you want to use use the current layer as a mask. check it and it will group the two. Or you could just create the layer and option click on the line between the two when you are done.
