Annacarina, check to see which layers are active and be sure that you actually have piixels whose values are above the midpoint of the lightness range for that color space. For example, if your RGB image is completely filled with Gray whose value is 120, and you try to select the luminosity, nothing will be selected because the command will only slect pixels which are greater than 128. For LAB the value of the mid point in the L channel is 50.

I could tell you how to fix it for a Mac, but not for a PC.

For the Mac there is a known conflict with the System Preferences for the Apple Keyboard shortcuts and changing the Apple default key combination fixes the problem in Photoshop.

I don't know if Win/XP has a place to check the default system keyboard shortcuts. ?

re: No marching ants
You're not using a laptop by chance, are you?

In any event, try this...
* Open Channels palette
* Ctrl + click on the RGB composite channel...

That ought to do the functional equivalent.

If you are using a UK keyboard the key strokes are CTRL- ALT and the key next to the number 1.

I got it to work by using Shift+opt+Cmd+`. I use to select the highlights like that and I'm not sure is that the same luminosity selection what you mean.
Also clicking Channels RGB image with Cmd key gives the same selection.

Hi,

Annacarina,

welcome to RetouchPRO! :pleased:

Since you pressed the ~ key, I'am assuming you are working on a US Keyboard ... You could try to go to the Channels and Ctrl+Click on the top one, the composite RGB ..

Krisse,

you are obviously working on a Mac so it was just a matter of 'translating' the keyboard commands from a PC to a Mac ... as you successfully did!

Christine,

I work with an Italian Keyboard and Ctrl+Alt+1, for me, selects the luminosity of the red channel only!!!

If you want to be sure to select the overall luminosity, you could try the alternative way I suggested to Annacarina.

You are correct. That tilde thing does not always work, it's annoying.

Instead you may wish to consider Control-clicking the composite RGB channel. That always works properly.

To verify your results, just type a Q, since in this context, the marching ants will only show one-half of the selection.
