View Full Version : A scenic shot Janet Petty 06-25-2006, 09:04 PM I thought I'd add to the variety here by posting a picture taken from the bluffs above a little town called Calico Rock in northcentral Arkansas.
We haven't had a landscape for a while. So enjoy.
Janet cardmnal 06-25-2006, 10:28 PM Great picture Janet. Looks like a neat place.....
Here is my "kinda wierd" version. Dillied with hue/saturation, dallied with levels, and then I applied Xero's Carvaggio filter and messed around with some brush strokes. lkroll 06-25-2006, 11:06 PM Did some cleanup work using GIMP's GREYCstoration filter too. :) palms1 06-26-2006, 01:24 AM Great photo Janet and a nice change will have a go soon
Ikroll love the work you are doing with the GREYCstoration flter in gimp any chance of explaining what it is/does
Palms Ziaphra 06-26-2006, 03:19 AM Tried to go for a real painterly feel...:) Steve Conway 06-26-2006, 11:19 AM Nice one!
Steve
Did some cleanup work using GIMP's GREYCstoration filter too. :) Janet Petty 06-26-2006, 11:38 AM Very nice cardmnal, lyle, and ziaphra. You have done a wonderful job making this picture into a beautiful piece of artwork.
Janet oltenius 06-26-2006, 11:49 AM Very nice photo! Godmother 06-26-2006, 12:31 PM Like it? I thought I'll give it a Try. Steve Conway 06-26-2006, 12:50 PM A softened version...don't know if I like the frame colors or not.
Anyway here 'tis.
Steve Steve Conway 06-26-2006, 12:57 PM Wanted to see what it would look like if Ansel had shot it.
Steve jch71566 06-26-2006, 01:29 PM What a lovely picture! I also love your painting, Janet!
Here's mine -- done mostly with paint engine.
-Jeff oltenius 06-26-2006, 01:43 PM This photo is very attractive! Well, another try... lkroll 06-26-2006, 06:08 PM ...GREYCstoration is a method for removing lpi dithering (like the dots in newspapers and such) to create a smoother image if you will. As applied to the rendering, it creates the almost smudge feel to the piece which is cool. Along with some Aniso (learned the term from Phyllis recentlly and which I was doing inadvertantly for a long time now) can make for some cool renderings. GREYCstoration wasn't invented for GIMP; its been around for some time. There is even a stand alone program that can do this (downloaded it, but have not used it yet since it's built in the GIMP). Check this link (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12695&highlight=GREYCstoration) out for some addition info. :) sylvia1065 06-26-2006, 07:37 PM I don't believe it, Lkroll! The guy that made that plugin is from my hometown in France!
Does that plugin work at all with Windows XP? I sure don't want to waste my energy on learning a new language!

Just download GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) and you won't have too. LOL
Again, GIMP's for free. I still find it quite useful (and my comfort zone is with the GIMP). :) palms1 06-27-2006, 01:14 AM Thanks for info Ikroll will check it out later
Palms patriciakay 06-27-2006, 03:17 PM Janet...Lovely photo...it looks such a peaceful place....Great painting, love the texture too!
Cardmnal....yours is good too...arnt the xero filters great?
Lyle....Nice...the GREYstoration is really working well for you...
Ziaphra.....Yes i think your picture has a nice painterly feel...
Oltenius....Love the bright summer colors in your first painting and your second is nice...happy colors!
Godmother....Like it ...yes...the frame just finishes it off!
Steve....Really nice and soft..did you smudge?
Jeff....Your soft paint engine look is really nice...
For mine i used the filter Lucis art....
Patricia.... oltenius 06-27-2006, 03:24 PM Patricia, thank you! ...and I like the contrast between blue and green color in your creation.
Regards patriciakay 06-27-2006, 03:27 PM You are welcome Oltenius...
Thanks for your comment...such a nice photo i found it hard to decide what to do with it...
Patricia... :classic: oltenius 06-27-2006, 03:55 PM Patricia... Well, I decided to erase the natural landscape and with my imagination I created a wrong color palette over this nice photo! Very easy to destroy the nature  barbara 06-27-2006, 04:41 PM Pat, you created a mood of danger in your picture, great
Steve, very nice artistic look (I think ,a frame in one color will look nicely with
this photo, but of course it is my personally mind, so please forget it )
Here my version of this great photo
I used Gimp  patriciakay 06-27-2006, 04:52 PM Barbara...Thank you for your comment.... I like your painting, to me its a mixture of softness and also a good sharpness around the rocks...you mixed it well!!!
Oltenius...its not destroyed...just different...
Goodnight....
Patricia :tired: barbara 06-27-2006, 04:58 PM thanks Patricia,
goodnight  mistermonday 06-27-2006, 06:49 PM How I would image it would look like on some warm planet,
Regards, Murray Steve Conway 06-28-2006, 09:01 AM Thamks...yeah, wasn't too sure about the frame. Mostly I just put a thin black one on an image. I now have a nice frame maker program and you can turn them out so quickly that I really didn't take the time to choose a better, or more complimentary color.
Steve

Here my version of this great photo
I used Gimp  Steve Conway 06-28-2006, 09:09 AM No, not smudged as you folks refer to it. Sort of an off-beat version of the technique which I continue to work on with combinations of programs and plugs. I think this one involved Gertrudis and some Buzz layering and the ever popular blend layer(s).
And thanks.
Steve
Janet...Lovely photo...it looks such a peaceful place....Great painting, love the texture too!
Steve....Really nice and soft..did you smudge?
For mine i used the filter Lucis art....
Patricia.... kiska 06-28-2006, 09:19 AM Forgot what i did. Just found this. jch71566 06-28-2006, 12:24 PM Patricia,
I really like what you did with Lucius -- it creates a lot of tension.
Thanks, also, for your kind comments.
-Jeff patriciakay 06-28-2006, 12:33 PM Nice one Kiska....lovely colors and movement...
Jeff....Thanks for your comment...I really like the lucis art filter...a fun one to play with...
I also have paint engine...but i am trying to actually paint in Painter and Photoshop CS2 among others...it gives some great effects though...
Patricia... :classic: dkcoats 06-28-2006, 07:03 PM Having a good photo to work with sure makes it easier, eh? I was working in a sort of classic landscape vein here, or at least that was the intention.
CS2/AHB
Bas relief & texturizer
dc pavel123 06-28-2006, 07:54 PM Gertrudius, dry brush, some smudging.
Pavel Kraellin 06-28-2006, 11:22 PM nice picture, janet :)
craig patriciakay 06-29-2006, 10:21 AM Murray..Like your out in space painting...the colors are great...
dc....Your painting has a really nice texture and the bas relief really brings out the details...
Pavel...Its a lovely painterly look on yours....soft...
Craig.....amazing sky...I always take photos when my sky is those pinky blue colors...usually late summer...Love all of it ...it glows!!!
Patricia.... :classic: Kraellin 06-29-2006, 03:24 PM patricia,
you realize that if you keep complimenting my work i'm going to get a big head :) but, thank you :)
it was a bit of airbrushing for the sky and then some smudge on that. fun stuff :)
craig patriciakay 06-29-2006, 03:39 PM :pleased: Craig...I think you should give credit where its due and i do think you are doing some great things....So often we do things in life and never even get a thankyou or a thats nice but i am always happy for kind words and kind deeds...so if you are gonna keep doing this great art then...Big head it is... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Patricia... Kraellin 06-29-2006, 03:43 PM hehehe, boy, i guess that was sort of a sneaky way to get extra praise there. it really wasnt intended, at least not consciously, so, thank you again :)
it took a while to get some inspiration on that one. i've been playing around so much with filter forge and had tried several effects using FF on that image, but just wasnt coming up with anything i really liked. it wasnt till i hit on the twilight idea that things came together and didnt even use FF on it :)
craig Janet Petty 06-30-2006, 06:52 AM WOW, this thread really took off with some great creativity and examples to match. I'm so glad you are all having so much fun with the bluff and the river.
Oltenius, both of your versions show great creativity are are bright and vibrant. Quite striking.
Godmother, simply beautiful.
Steve Conway, your smudged and softened one is pretty. Personally, I'd like to see a bit more depth to the brush strokes; but that may be because this old lady is blind as a bat. The frame is a good touch.
jch, yours is abstracted in a good way. Nice use of the brushes.
PatriciaKay, very different and very dramatic. I liked.
Barbara, I really love your style. This picture shows it off well. Your gimp mastery on a linux machine is wonderful. Just don't tell my husband I said so because he's been after me to go linux for years. He's a linux kernal developer btw.
Mr. Monday (or Murray for short), you have a perfect sci-fi execution here. So when does the book come out?
Kiska, what do I say to my friend...? ...that she is simply amazing. Your SA abilities have moved into the realm of master. Great job.
dkcoats, lovely, moody, and evocative of impending rain. Love the texture. I'd hang this one on my wall. Thumbs up.
Pavel, also moody. Has a good brush flow and looks like it belongs on a wall hanging. I like it.
Kraelin, I love the crop, the colors, the contrast, and especially the sky. In fact, yours looks quite a bit like a real sunset picture I took there a few weeks ago...only mine turned out blurry because hand holding a camera in that kind of light wasn't the wisest choice. :)
Keep up the good pictures folks.
Janet oltenius 06-30-2006, 08:37 AM Janet, thanks for appreciation and... thanks again for the wonderful posted picture.
Best regards
Dan kiska 06-30-2006, 12:44 PM Why, HAWG, is that the best you could think to say??????? :lmao:  :!: ..................
thanks! Kraellin 06-30-2006, 03:14 PM janet,
thank you and i'm glad you noticed the crop :)
we needed a landscape and that one was quite good. you guys are posting such good pictures that i'm very tempted to get back into it, especially with the digital cameras now.
craig barbara 06-30-2006, 07:37 PM Janet
thanks very very much for your so warm, friendly and encouraging comments :wavey:
Janet, please try Linux if you can, only try and see how nice it is, to try Gimp in it's
native environment
Janet, it can only give you some new inspirations, some new experiences !
and you have at home one Linux-Master, so you can immediately have an answer on
each question !
(newest info btw : today I have moved Paint Engine ! - yes, it works on Linux too!! )
Janet, now I will not leave you in peace :lmao: OnAir 07-07-2006, 01:10 AM I feel like to make a japanese effect for the picture. Kraellin 07-07-2006, 12:53 PM onair,
i like that and yes, very japanese. an onion skin texture to simulate paper would also have worked.
craig Wow, you folks have been busy!
Wouldn't be fair to single anybody out - so congratulations to all.
....and thanks to Janet for (yet) another wonderful image.
I was fiddling around with the Lens Blur filter and discovered that it can give some quite artistic effects. Here I used a greyscale image as the base and also as the mask.
Rô Kraellin 07-09-2006, 09:19 AM nice, Ro.
here's one using my 'high pass variations' filter forge filter on a layer above the original blended with luminosity.
craig lkroll 07-09-2006, 12:02 PM Pretty cool Craig. :) BethMarian 07-09-2006, 02:58 PM This is me messing around with some new and old actions. The first one is lomoyze which i found today - seems very complicated and will have to sit down one day and carefully figure out all the steps, but certainly does seem to give the best lomo results I've seen in a while..... except the colours didn't seem saturated enough, and i love me some colour. So boosted them with velvia and provia actions, finally blended that over the previous image at soft light @ 75%.
I must say, was impressed with the lomoyze doo-daa. Anybody else using it?
oltenius, i love the 2 pics you posted, what did you do? patriciakay 07-09-2006, 03:50 PM Like both of yours Ro....Nice one from you Craig...
Bethmarian.....Like your effect too...fun to try different actions...welcome to RetouchPro...look forward to seeing more of your work...
Patricia.... :wavey: oltenius 07-09-2006, 04:44 PM oltenius, i love the 2 pics you posted, what did you do?
Marian, Thanks!
I posted 'long time ago' my attempts and I dont remember very well how was made because I dont written my steps. Shame on me! Well, I think that I improved the levels and curves. After, must be use the watercolor technique, play with the sky, water and other elements in separated layers, use a decent unsharp mask, color balance and shadow/highlight and apply a texture. I prefer a sandstone texture. Sorry for my english!
Regards,
Dan Kraellin 07-09-2006, 10:31 PM thanks lk :) yes, i've got a couple filter forge filters that do glass effects. i can post some quickies if you're interested.
thanks patricia :)
welcome to RetouchPRO, Beth. nice rendition. reminds me of a high pass effect. great definition and contrast.
craig Kraellin 07-09-2006, 10:42 PM oh heck, who am i kidding. i just want to show these off :)
craig Duffy Pratt 07-09-2006, 10:57 PM A change of seasons?
Duffy lkroll 07-09-2006, 11:03 PM oh heck, who am i kidding. i just want to show these off :)
craig
Maybe next week, I'll check into filter forge and then get some of your filters to play with. :) Kraellin 07-09-2006, 11:55 PM hehehe, i knew we'd seduce you to the dark side, lk :)
i just submitted the filter that made these. it's called 'Glass Menagerie II'. it shld be ready to download tomorrow.
craig patriciakay 07-10-2006, 02:18 PM Duffy.....Like your autumn look...
Craig....These filters are great...like looking through a frosted glass window...
Just nipping over to filter forge to see if i can download it!!!Thanks....
Patricia........ :) Kraellin 07-10-2006, 02:21 PM patricia, thanks :)
that filter is one i've been poking at for a while. i was sort of waiting till the next big update in FF, but finally broke down and submitted it. i'll probably revise it and add some real frosting and maybe colored glass when the update comes out....soon, i hope :)
craig patriciakay 07-10-2006, 02:25 PM Sounds like a fun one Craig....scares me all that mathematical stuff....but i love to experiment with filters....
Patricia........ :dizzy: Kraellin 07-10-2006, 02:33 PM patricia, hehehe....me too. but that's one of the beauties of FF; you dont need to know math. just plug n play. most of the stuff i do is done by some knowledge of how things work, but a lot is just 'let's see what this does' and then going from there.
in fact, i'll tell you a little secret. i made one GIANT filter quite a while back. this was a real messy one. lines were going everywhere, but it creates some really interesting effects and it's MASSIVE! so, when i got done with this behemoth, i decided not to submit it. but, i started making presets, tons of presets. i use the randomizer and find all sorts of things i'd swear i never put in there. when i find something interesting i make THAT one my default preset and then go back into the editor. that takes my preset into the editor as well. all i do then is trace this preset back down the chain of components and find out what is creating this effect, what components. i write this down or simply highlight all those components and hit 'copy'. i then back out of the editor and open a new filter. i then simply paste my chain as the new filter and start tweaking it.
simple :)
craig patriciakay 07-10-2006, 02:46 PM Thanks for sharing your secret....Craig...If only i had a bit more time to play...at the moment theres a lot going on so i will have to be patient...I expect once you get into it, its highly addictive and the more you do the more you want to do...Rock on ...youre doing a great job...
Patricia.... :pleased: pavel123 07-19-2006, 06:43 PM I tried to repeat what Kraellin did before - to make a this picture a sunset.
Impressionist Pointillist Sparse layer, Smudged layer, layer masks.
Pavel Kraellin 07-19-2006, 11:42 PM pavel123, very nice! i like that :)
craig pavel123 07-20-2006, 06:58 PM pavel123, very nice! i like that :)
craig
Craig,
Thank you. Personally I admit that was a rush job, some parts of the image could've taken more work. The idea is nice, nevertheless.
Pavel raniday 07-22-2006, 01:17 PM Just had to throw in my 2 cents worth here, being an Arkansas gal myself. Great photo, Janet (as usual), and everyone has done the little rural town of Calico Rock proud with their paintings. It got its name because some of the rock walls along the river that flows at one end of the town have splotches of color in them that reminded someone of calico fabric. | |
