Okay, so she not really a Romulan, she's a German Shepherd.
Her name is Rommy (short for Andromeda) we just call her the Romulan because she really can be a brat!
I took this last month while we were out camping.

I did her in Painter with watercolor brushes.

Hi Sherry...

Beautiful dog.

After knocking out the BG and using Levels to bring out a little facial detail, I applied the #djrOils24 Impressionist setting and a little Unsharp Mask.

Thanks for letting us play. :)

What a handsome puppy!!

My attempt, a quickeee.

Imp Watercolour layer with Imp Chalk layer with some transparency and layer mask in grey. Overlay with adjusted edges.

When I was growing up, they called these dogs German Police dogs. Anyone remember that? Anyway we had several along the way.

And here is my take on this very nice image. Especially like the way the dog is posed.

oh my this is cool, I'm loving looking at the results! :D

Danny I really like that painted look, the looseness of the strokes is balanced with the detail beautifully!

Palms, the clarity really adds a lot of interest

Oltenius LOVE what you did with the color!

Fluffbutt the loose wetness of your watercolor is really lovely

Steve, How did you do that? I love the way the strokes work with the image and the contrast of the dark strokes is really interesting.
I occasionally still get asked if my dogs are police dogs, we do a lot with them but no police work!
tat? OH TATTOO! she's chipped too!

Closer to reality?
I used some of my filters:
Sharpening
White Balance
Exposure/Lighting/Contrast

Beautiful Dog, Beautiful Interpretations.

I did mine with Paint Engine, using various masks and selections.

Thank you, it was pleasure to work on such a nice image. Our dogs that we had when I was growing up never did any police work either. But I never heard these dogs referred to as anything but German Police dogs until I was grown. For some reason you never hear them called that anymore.

As for how I did mine, can't remember all the steps, but it involved a cutout filter script, layering, and painting in some detail and then applying painterly strokes with Gertrudis Pro.

Here's a version I did yesterday, I kind'a forgot how I did it now for the most part.
I know it's a sketchy type, and I just outlined it (kind'a, really quick) and dropped in a new background.
I did copy and paste the black linework over the color image, then played around with several layers to get it where it is.
I also used a 'hair brush' that I have to help outline this, but I really just didn't take the needed time to make it look perfect.

Modified my Thread2 preset using the Cresent Moon family of brushes in Impressionist. Thought the result looked cool enough to post (low quality didn't seem to hurt it much). :)

Yup, the crescent moon's a keeper. Won't create a new preset for Impressionist though (forces you all to play with the inner settings and learn this fantastic filter; I'm still discovering wonders as I play with it). :)
