Yea I bet you were all thinking, heather, heath, hills and kilts weren't you? This is a pic my brother took last year, I thought it would serve well as an "artyfying" piece, and he doesn't mind.....John

Here's an action I found called Sharons coloured sketch, then some edits of my own, ok it's cheating a little, but the way it's done lets you add your own touches. And I like it..... I think I might try a light smudge next.....John
Oh, and palms1, what's ahb? (pardon my ignorance)

Ah-har, in that case I do like the look of your ahb pickie.. I'll have to have a good look at that, I've had a run thru' a tute for it, but to a beginner like me, it did seem complex.....Anyway I'm too much engrossed with this smudging lark at the mo...nice one .....John

For those wanting a scenic picture of Scotland, this is one I took a couple of weeks ago when I was on holiday (it always rains when I take my holidays).

Have fun.

Nice Patricia......Thanks for the kind words(you're becoming my guardien angel) I'm doing a smudge now but I'm having trouble with the path (trying to do it all with Sarah's hairbrush) it either looks too much or not enough. (damn thing)..maybe leave it tonight and have another go tomorrow. :dizzy: ....John

Patricia, thanks! Your creation is wonderful...

Britsdad, my water color attempt has a classical method... Copy three times the background. Desaturate first copy, increase the light, apply poster edges and set blending mode to overlay. On the second copy set blending mode to multiply and adjust opacity to 60-80%, for the top layer set blending mode to screen, set the interior opacity (fill) to 90-95%. Play on every layer with color balance and selective color, hue and saturation. Finally apply the texture. I hope is helpful for you...

Dan

Well i thought you were mad trying to smudge this picture too much detail and so i thought i would have a go at it, and yes i can confirm you are barking mad to try it (although you havent done to bad)
first of all ran the action effie basic (download from here http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~mikefinn/action.html it is free but i use it sometimes when i am in a hurry before i smudge it speeds things up and you can see where to smudge (the squiggly lines ) ) then i started to smudge then gave up added a find edge layer and overlayed and reduced opacity

Photoshop Craig i am going to have to have lessons of you for cleaning up are you as good with housework ?????

Love all the versions you lot have come up with, and yes palms you were right. (bad idea..lol).....
Littlecoo: Try this site for the action, it's about half way down the page http://www.kolbotn-fk.com/artikkel05.htm There's lots of stuff there, and Danny had a hand in the sketch action as well......John.

Interesting effect. Bit monotone, but with a little variation has definite possibilities.

I haven't started playing with this picture yet, kinda liked it as it is, but you've given me a few ideas for manipulating it a touch.

Thanks.

Dup, ran Color to Alpha on top layer and set this layer property to Screen. Dupped this layer to taste and flattened. Dupped, ran Flaming Pear's Mr. Contrast on Top layer and blended to taste. Flattened and ran GREYCstoration, adjust sat/color and saved (well some cleaning smudges were required). :)

Copyright? I don't know as there is any, it's only a holiday snap that I perloined...lol...Use it if you like barbara, with mine and my brothers blessing. (His name is David Plummer, if you want to know, and I think he'll be dead chuffed to see it "in lights" so if you do use it give me the URL to it.)....regards John. :bigthmb:

Barbara,
Your GIMP works are incredible. Would you know if a WinXP version of GIMP exists? Thank you so much.

Pavel

P.S. I reckon that since I already posted the original photo by mistake, I should at least make a re-touched version.

Hallo Pavel,
thanks for nice comment

Gimp is a great Open Source project and is free for both : personal and commercial use.
It's native environment is Linux ( so here it works better ).
Of course the Open Source "community" or better say "movement", is not selfish - so
there are downloads for Unix, Mac and Windows users.
Homepage is: www.gimp.org
Install it and enjoy !

Hi Barbara,

I couldn't help admiring the Gimp watercolor version that you did

I can't tell you how many times I've seen some Gimp results that I liked and when I go searching for www Gimp info about capabilities such as your watercolor result, I find nothing that makes sense to me.

I know each new program takes time to learn, and your result really makes me want to try it - even tho I don't have much excess time.

Could you briefly describe the process and gimp tools that you used.
Was there a plug-in that helped?
I assume that the brushes were the key - how much adjustment did you have to make in their properties?

I'd appreciate any help you can provide

Thanks

Bob Mc

Hallo Bob,
thanks for your nice comments and let's talk about mentioned watercolor imitation
-"I assume that the brushes were the key"- no, not here.
-"Could you briefly describe the process and gimp tools that you used " - of course

My first steps after cropping were painting to add some color to many parts of the image
(using standard round brushes mostly with opacity reduced to about 30%)
purpose was to close the composition.
Then used Smudge Tool and smudged many details out, to simplify the image.
The last step was Filter-> Blur-> Selective Gaussian Blur.
To find satisfying settings don't be afraid to experiment, in Gimp we have many undo-levels,
so repeating keyboard-shortcut Ctrl Z we can go back so many steps as we need

I will be glad if I was able to answer your question. I hope you will enjoy Gimp.
Greetings
Barbara

 Great efforts all around.

Couldn't resist having a go since I originate from Scotland - Och Aye!!! Thanks for the use of the great photo. Used Buzz, Lucis Art and Impressionist (i.e. Trimoons WC setting) on this. I spend a lot of time mostly using Painter IX.5 over the past 18 months, so it's nice to do something a whole lot easier for a change.
