Ok, I'm a bit dense, and I am fully aware of that, but what is effie basic???

Great manip!

Steve great picture love that look that you get
Sorry but effie basic is a action which once again i dont think you can use in Paint Shop Pro ( although it is mainly usm and anisotropic )

I was afraid of that. Wow! that's one nice "action." "Script" in Paint Shop Pro.

Anyone want to tackle a simulation of it for for Paint Shop Pro? :confused:

Thanks for the nice comments on my version of the boat.

Steve

How about this one then, Action that is (sorry Steve again ) found it today at action central called emboss glow just ran it and then added a copy of the original overlayed (not sure which way round though ) and tweaked colours around (which could be better i think )

Hi Palms....Nice pic....we called them barges in Leeds...they go on the canal...

Two nice renditions from you and the emboss one is my fave...

Steve....I also love the painted look you get on yours...lovely colors and details...

I just did a watercolor with the AHB in Photoshop CS2 and put a border around in Dream Suite...

Patricia.... :tired: Its just too hot here at the moment....

maybe you can write the steps ?
(almost there are many possible ways to achieve an effect, so I believe, it is possible
to do in Paint Shop Pro and Gimp something "near" )

Steve - as usual :thumbsup: very nice :happy:

Long boats i think

Actually they're known as Narrowboats. Their width is constrained by the width of the locks they have to pass through, on the canals for which they were designed to operate.

Nice picture, like almost everyone's renditions.

Patricia nice water colour and Ikroll great again , Thank you Barbara i will have to doulble check the steps of "effie" but it is basically just usm and aniso
Gary Thank you Narrowboats that was what i was lookin for but wouldnt come to mind although we also call them barges, canal boats & long boats
Coming from Birmingham i should of got it right as we have more canal's than Venice

I'd just been watching a program on Satellite about canals, so it seemed serendipitous that a few minutes later I saw your picture.

They mentioned the fact about Birmingham having more canals than Venice as well.

Seems strange that Birmingham should have so many canals, but then its in a pretty central location, tied to pottery, engineering and a whole lot of other industries, so I don't suppose we should be so surprised.

As Patricia has already said, we tend to call them barges in Leeds, but the programme insisted the correct term is Narrowboat, so I defer to their greater knowledge.

Barbara, I am certainly open to suggestions here.

I have not seen a step-by-step break-down of Effie, so that would have to be my first priority. Then find out from another Paint Shop Pro user what they have substituted for some of the Photoshop filters...ansiotropic for instance...in Paint Shop Pro.

Not a number one priority, but sometimes effects are just really different and outstanding. And you want to add them to your graphics software. There seem to be shelves of Photoshop books for all kinds of image manipulation, but although I still am happy with Paint Shop Pro, I am really frustrated when I see these great tutorials and actions for Photoshop posted here and can't use them.

Can you tell me which version of Photoshop first started using actions? It is far above my hobby budget to pay for the newest version of Photoshop.

I have a few Photoshop filters which work well in both Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop, but not the diffuse filter that contains ansiotropic.

And thanks much for your nice words.

Steve

hmm, i have access to Photoshop from time to time, but when i checked recently, i couldnt even find anisotropic. where is it? if i can look at it separately in ps, maybe i can come up with something comparable in Paint Shop Pro.

Craig, it's the diffuse filter. One of the tic choices in that filter is good ole anisotropic. It's under the "stylize" group of filters.

It says quote, "Anisotropic mode shuffles pixels toward the areas of least color change."????

Good luck.

Steve

Hey Barbara,

I use the Windows version of GIMP which allows many of the Photoshop plugins to work in it. For Aniso, you can either try the Warp Sharp Script-fu (does a very good job), or download Xero's Supersmooth filter (even better job). Toadies Metalwork filter when applied through Opacity adjustments can also give you the Aniso effect. If you are more adventurous, you can do a bitmap to vector conversion using Autotrace and reconvert back to bitmap (my old trick; not enough control though and can require a lot of cleaning). :)

Additionally, though not free, you can use Flaming Pear's Mr. Contrast in creative ways to get the Aniso effect. So many ways to skin a cat.

After nearly thirty years in Brazil I'm still a Brummy at heart - and, to me, them there are barges. :nod:

Thought I'd show off some of the filters I have made in Filter Forge:

1) Chalk / Charcoal;
2) Adaptive Tiling;
3) Painter Strokes;
4) Metal Portrait;
5) Directional Tiling.

Many thanks to all, for the help on my aniso project.

I am sure one of these techniques will give me what I want. Can always expect some good info on this group.

Now to check 'em out.

Steve...Good luck with your quest for aniso...do let us know what you find...

Ro....Thanks for showing us your Filter Forge filters....I have it but just play with it on my photos...
Love the first one...good definition...
The third one is nice too...reminds me of carpeting or tapestry...
Like the 4th one makes me think of a 50 s look for some reason...
The second and the fifth are not my cup of tea....but in certain cases i would use them...

Aye lad them will always be barges to me too.... :lol:

Barbara, Steve & Craig i have posted some screen shots of my history and acton palettes also the usm setting with what i thought matched the one used in the action (close as i could get, i did then try it on a different image and had to alter slightly to get the same result!) so that you can see what the effie action is about ( much better way than me trying to explain) hope that it will be of some use to you and that you can get close to the actions as i find it a extremely useful action

Hello there fellow Brummie, which area are you from ? boy have we changed in 30 years , but still eat faggots chips and mushy peas
Funny how we all differ i like the fourth and fifth one of your filters best !

Palms

Photoshop just had a thought that faggots mean something completely different in America than here in the uk, But it will give you something to think about for the weekend :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: ( and no googling )

Hey Barbara,
...

Hey Lyle :happy:
thanks for this idea - I can do metal effect in Gimp without additional filters,
so now I will test this direction.
Warp_sharp, I'm afraid , works very good but very isotropic :happy:
Greycstoration - other solution, maybe the best one ?

Steve Conway

Thanks Palms, I am going to get to work on some of these ideas. I appreciate all your efforts.

Meantime I may be looking for a used version of Photoshop 8 or CS to supplement Paint Shop Pro. There are just too many good image manip ideas out there for Photoshop.

IT'S DRIVING ME SANE! :dizzy:

Aha! The term is Narrowboat, but we call 'em Barges - reminds me of one of my favourite passages... "Alice and the White Knight" (http://homepages.tcp.co.uk/~nicholson/alice.html)

barbara, here is the complete breakdown..
1) Duplicate the document;
2) Flatten image (flatten layers to just one "background");
3) Convert mode to RGB (just in case you're in some other mode);
4) Duplicate layer (to a new layer named "Aniso");
5) Unsharp mask (very harsh sharpen with Amount 500%, Radius 1,5, Threshold 3);
6) Anisotropic (first time);
7) Rotate image 90 degrees;
8) Anisotropic (second time);
9) Rotate image back 90 degrees (to original orientation);
10) Selective color (you can use a Levels adjustment here for the blackpoint);
11) Make snapshot.

Hello there fellow Brummie, which area are you from ?
Hall Green, just off Stratford Road....and you?
