View Full Version : Has anyone read Photoshop magazine this month? What's going on people. I'm new to photoshop and I'm trying to retouch some photos. There was a picture in Photoshop User that was in the contest section and the pic won best retouch. The skin was draker and the eyes stood out in the pic. I'm trying to get my pictures to look like that. I don't have a scanner to scan the pic i'm referring to but is there a step-by-step guide on this ite to retouching? Any help would be appreciated... PatrickB 07-10-2006, 09:18 AM Uhm, there are a lot of tutorials on retouchpro, maybe you want to try out the tutorials-section?
And about your image: How are we supposed to help if nobody knows the picture. btw, there are hundreds of photoshop-magazines out there... :jacko:

The mag was Photoshop user, but this looks like what I'm trying to do. Thanks a bunch. I'm going to buy the mag and get it scanned so you can see what I'm talking about. Is this the one you are talking about. If so, it's in the June issue of Photoshop User. Is this the one you are talking about. If so, it's in the June issue of Photoshop User.
YOU GOT IT!! That is the pic I'm talking about! How do I get my pic to look like that? Can you help me by giving me step-by-step instructions? PatrickB 07-13-2006, 07:50 AM Hey, sure I can:
1. Go buy a licensed version of Photoshop
2. Work your way through the tutorials to learn about the basic usage of the program
3. Find, read and learn some tutorials here and out on the net about basic retouching techniques.
4. Come back here occasionally and ask other retouchers about what to do if you have a specific problem.
5. Continue for around one or two years
6. THEN, try to do what this first prize winner did.
Sorry for that offensive post, but from the threads you have posted yet it looks as if you have not a single minute experience with retouching or the software and want us to teach you everything within a minute or so. That'll hardly work.
Patrick
PS: If it's just a single picture, you might get one to do it for you by friendly asking. NancyJ 07-13-2006, 08:06 AM Hey, sure I can:

Theres really no need to be rude.
to the OP. After basic cleanup and correction, looks to me like a multiply layer has been used (probably using the green on blue channel) finished off with some masking and hand manipulation on the eyes Hey, sure I can:

1. I wasn't aware that you know what I bought. You got me feeling like I'm Rockwell. I don't remember you being there when I bought it, much less chipping in cash for the progam.
2. I've been working with the tutorials thus far
3. See above
4. That's why I'm here. Think man. I'm guessing you weren't around when they were passing out common sense.
5. I'm here for the long haul.
6. I'm a perfectionist in what ever I do. It's guys like that that inspire me and I don't mind putting in the work. I did it for salsa, music production, and writing, and I'm not about to let you tell me what I can attempt and not attempt.
In conclusion, I don't give two ****s about your apology. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. That's what I did to you, and I'm not taking it back. If you want to help, that's cool and it's appreciated, but you don't need to attempt to belittle me just because I'm new to the program. Believe it or not there was a time you weren't good at the program. I came to this site, because there were certain things I want to do with the program and I'm not above asking people how have experience in the program who can help me step up. Thank you for helping Nancy. Don't worry about Patrick. It's easy to tell that he's not socially adept. He's a peasant to me. Once again, I appreciate all those that helped out thus far... Theres no need for you to be rude either. Two wrongs dont make a right ;) Theres no need for you to be rude either. Two wrongs dont make a right ;)
You're right, but I got my point across. You and I will get along just fine... PatrickB 07-13-2006, 08:22 AM Mate,
yesterday you didn't even know the basics of Photoshop:
I wasn't trying to disrespect at all. It just didn't work for me, but the other tutorials so far have been great. How do I make a selection? What tool do I use? I still getting used to CS2.
I might have been harsh, you are insulting, big difference. End of discussion Mate,

Yet you still had to respond. Don't get mad, because I put you in your place *lol* Do me a favor and stay out of my way in the future and everything will be lovely.... NancyJ 07-13-2006, 10:34 AM You're right, but I got my point across. You and I will get along just fine...
Not with that attitude we wont. We are a strong community and if your current behavior persists you will certainly not be making any friends around here.
I defended you because I felt Patrick was out of line, while his points may have been valid, the aggressive delivery was unnecessary. Your retaliation was equally rude and unnecessary.
There are a lot of very experienced and helpful people on this forum who go to great lengths to help newbies but a little humility goes a long way. You have to accept your status as a newbie, be polite to those offering assistance and dont try to walk before you can run. KR1156 07-13-2006, 11:14 AM Just to add on to what NancyJ was saying......this place is a gold mine, learned more here in the last year than in most books. Also made some great contacts/friends. PatrickB 07-13-2006, 11:31 AM Yes Nancy,
you were right in saying I'm a bit "off the honeybunny-speech" here ;)
But the reason was NOT to say "Hey I...! Go get some skills, then come back!". Well, basically it was, although not that much. It just annoys me seeing people popping in and yelling "Hey what's going on, I read a tutorial and don't understand it. It's bad. How do I work with Photoshop, I installed it 5 minutes ago and still can't do as good as Erwin Olaf! What are layers and how do I make a selection?".
I know what a pain Photoshop is. Today I/we are using it right like driving a car. Try to start your engine, crash into the next gas-station, climb out and yell to the race-driver around "Hey, what's going on, I just skimmed thru the
manual of the car. I'm a pro now, how do I drive faster than Schuhmacher?" Will that work?
And people like this telling they put me into place don't make me more helpful either...
About the topic: It's first hi-pass sharpen, cleanup, color-adjustment and some excessive paint with light here. But don't ask me how, I have too little experience in the program and lack common sense, so I'm absolutely not qualified ;) skydog 07-13-2006, 08:27 PM Just some comments as a relatively new member to this forum. While reading the posts for the past six months, I have learned a great deal, I have found some members who have been extremely helpful and informative to many of us who post, at times, very basic questions. For myself, I have been a photographer for the past thirty years, and only converted to digital four years ago. I feel, I have learned a lot during the past four years, but I also know I have a long way to go. With regards to digital, I have gone to various photography and photoshop seminars, I am constantly reading books and magazines, I visit websites, and I do practice and experiment. Many of the very good digital photographers and artists, often mentioned at this site, have a "look" and "feel" that one can't find in a book. If I ask if someone knows how to create a look, it is only to learn a new approach/method that I wish to add to my "toolbox". I have no desire to copy someone else's look...I do want to create my own, but I am certain I would use what have learned from the "masters" as most artists tend to do.
So the original question that started this thread I thought was a good one. I too saw this photo in photoshop and wondered the process used to create this look. If you can't ask within this forum...where can one ask? As Rho recently responded to a member: "there is no stupid question".
My two cents...sky skydog 07-13-2006, 08:33 PM I also found this link interesting
[URL=http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13899] Flora 07-14-2006, 02:03 AM Hi everybody,
Arrogance, rudeness and insulting have never helped anyone and, personally, I think it's very sad if someone has to jump in to defuse situations in which adults can't keep their tempers under control.
At RetouchPRO we are all sharing the same interest: photo retouching and restoring, either as hobby or profession, and we are all here to learn and to share.
Everybody here is willing to help any way they can, but, to be able to help, the following is the minimum needed:
1) Politeness.
2) Knowledge of the RetouchPRO rules.
3) Clear requests, possibly detailed, (even better if accompanied by an example).
What Rô said "there is no stupid question"... but, "I've seen a picture I like in a magazine" .... won't work.
4) At least a basic knowledge of the 'working tools' and their functions indipendently of which software you are using ....
5) Knowledge of:
RP rules on what images can or cannot be posted,
attaching files to your posts and Threads,
file size and resolution of your attachments.
... Please, help us to help you! kiska 07-14-2006, 02:34 AM Roah you might find some Dragan tips and links here:
