Please see the link above to the image I am trying to replicate in photoshop. I failed badly.. No matter what I do I cant do it.
I am refferring his opening image.. alot of bluey green almost dreamy.. Can anyone show me how to achive this look please?? Ideally some sort of actions where I can apply to my images please..
any help is much appriciated

hi umitulgen,

doesnt look too difficult. basically looks like a bleached, slightly washed picture with a lot of green. you might try some brightness/contrast or light high pass filtering. i'd also try a duplicating the original layer and then doing a very slight gausian blur on the duped layer and use blend modes on that. that would give you the 'dreamy' look a bit.

might also help to post an image you're trying to achieve this look on.

The image I chose probably isnt ideal - its a bit moody and dark but I just picked the first that I found.

What I did was first, used curves to increase the brightness to start with.
Then I duped the layer and ran highpass 250px, set the blend mode to soft light. Its looking kind of dreamy now. Then I put a colour layer of green over the top and lowered the opacity till I was kinda happy with it - you'll need to experiment to get the exact look you want. You might also want to try selective colour to get the tonal range you like, or selectively masking the colour layer.

Same deal really, curves allows you to easily increase brightness while retaining contrast but you can achieve the same effect with brightness/contrast with easier control over the settings

Thank you for your efford and it looks interesting. Please dont laugh to my lack of knowledge in photoshop but I have no idea what highpass is. would it be possible to send me the actions you used, in a file form or written would be fine. Also this is the photo that I want to replicate that look. if anyone wants to have a go.

here's my try.

1) autolevels
2) curves in:130 out:182
3) stamp out shadows and darker areas
4) color balanced grass (levels -38 +14 -17)
5) copied blue channel and set it as a new layer blended as screen with 40%opacity
6) hue/ saturartion on colorized (hue:113, sat:17)
7) erased the orange man of the new layer to reveal the one beneath
8) shadow/highlight > set the shadows to 60%

I know I can do this other way, I'll keep playing a little to do it better; but I think this is kinda close.

here's another:

this one mostly with levels:

1) levels:
red > input: 14 / 0.50 / 241
green> input: 0 / 1.14 / 199 out: 38 / 255
blue> in: 0 / 0.97 / 24 out: 0 / 299
2) curves > in:105 out: 141
3) duped layer > screen
4) curves over duped layer in:140 out:207
5) erase man on duped layer
6) merged
7) autolaves and the faded the result on softlight @ 40% opacity.

...now complete with layer stack. Sorry for not being more clear before

1. Duplicated the original and ran auto levels.
2. Image -> adjustment ->curves, input 110, output 150
3. Duplicate layer
4. Filter -> other -> highpass 250px (thats just what I used, feel to experiment)
5. Image -> adjustments ->invert
6. Set the blend mode to softlight (again, room for experimentation)
7. Create new layer and fill with white
8. Set the blend mode to soft light and adjust the opacity to suit
9. Create a new layer and fill with the colour of your choice
10. Set the blend mode to colour and lower the opacity to suit

Thats about done. Mess around with the values and the blend modes to get exactly as you like. You could try a 2px gaussian blur on the highpass layer, also you could mask some more colour through on the colour layer or even bypass that layer altogether and use image->adjustments->selective colour to get the tonal range you want.

In this version I used selective colour (and increased the brightness) instead of the colour layer
