How do you create that border effect, similar to the attached Ed Gilmore image? I have purchased tutorials and tried online examples and I just can't seem to duplicate it.

Any suggestions on technique and brushes? I have photoshop 7.

Here's something you can try:
* Add a new layer above the painting layer
* Fill the new layer with white
* Add a hide all layer mask
* Literally paint white on the mask to reveal as much "white border" as you like. To speed the process a bit you can use the Lasso tool to draw a rough border, Select > Invert Selection, Edit > Fill (with white). Then start using the Brush tool for the rough edges.

On this quickie example using the pretty flowers pic (very nice if yours):
* I use PS7 brush "Chalk 36", airbrush setting on, Opacity 80%-100%, Flow 80% to paint the layer mask.

Hope this helps...Is this more or less what you had in mind?

After opening a new layer and filling it with white. In Paint Shop Pro you can select layers/load save mask/from disk. Then you can pick from a number of already available masks if you don't want to make one of your own.

Not sure how this works in Photoshop 7, but would bet there is a similar way to attach a mask to an image.
