Sorry to ask again

I am totally stumped as to how I can correct a photo like this - part of the picture attached

I seemed to be getting on so well with my learning - then I was asked to look at this old black and white
I just have no idea where to start
I only enclose part of the photo hoping that your advice can help me to learn how to rectify the whole photo myself

Try this:

1) Set your black, white and gray points with curves or levels.
2) Create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray.
3) Hit the letter "D" to set your foreground and background color to black and white.
4) Set the Blending Mode of your gray layer to "Overlay"
5) With a soft-edged brush, set at 30-40% opacity, paint on the gray layer with black to darken in those white-streaked areas. If you don't get satisfactory results in a few passes, increase the opacity of your brush.

I'm attaching a copy of what it looks like. The adjustment was made on the right side and took just a few passes.

Hi there

Here is another way... I selected an area that was faded, applied a big feather to it then used a cures adjustment layer to darken as needed. Then I used a soft brush with a low opacity and painted on the mask to darken other areas as needed.

I did not spend a great deal of time as it is a small picture but with a little time you can bring it back i believe.
