Thought I'd give it one last try ... similar to my last post with a few changes and tweaks ... don't know if they will show up at this res. Anyway, it's great to have a place to practice and get feed back ... we're all here to grow =)

I'm a novice at retouching, but I just joined here and so I thought I'd jump in and give it a try.

I see a lot of Great Work by many on this long thread...

Can someone guide me with best methods to smoothen the skin ?

As of now I am aware of this process:
- duplicate layer
- apply gaussian blur
- blend mode to soft light
- flatten image

Other technique is:

Dodge and burn!

Make a new layer, soft light blend mode and under the blend mode then tick the 50% grey box...

Then dodge dark areas in the skin adn burn light areas to get the skin more balanced....
search for dodge and burn on the search her at RP...

Here is my first real stab at a retouch. Thanks to all on the site sharing their ideas and tips. I have been lurking for a month or so after a friend showed me the site.

I am still trying to find a nice export setting using Photoshop CS3. This one seemed to crush the blacks and loose the detail in the hair. I spent a few hours painting in new hair all to see it lost to compression.

Jamz, I hope you don't mind the tattoos. Your creativity sparked mine and I ran with it.

Here is my retouch.....first one. Using SkinTune

just trying to clean it up a little.
crop for composition, remove all skin blemishes, fix red eyes, fix stain on bandana, fix levels, adjust curves, smooth out skin and giant pores, ummm, what elese, oh yeah, fix broken nose and plump up lips a tiny bit. oh, and reshape eyebrows, darken mascara and remove wrinkles from cleavage as well as wrinkle by mouth. I think that was it. about 15 minutes in photoshop.
there now, doesn't she look much nicer? :)

Rharris: thanks for sharing, first the fae looks a bit low on contrast! and the right eye looks very different from the left...maybe change that abit...the background was nice....how did you extract the model?

Thank you for your comment. I posted this (and plan to post more work) in efforts to find opportunity and work from people who like what I do. I'm not yet sure if that happens here much or not but, I'll give it a go.
I see that you are a senior member and I'm sure that you have alot more experience than I. I am mindful that you are quite possibly a very wise and talented artist. I'm self taught and have only been doing this for 5 years and I'm aware that I have alot to learn. Having said that, I respectfully disagree with your comment.
After working as a professional makeup artist for 25 years. I believe less is more in a natural portrait such as this. When I work on a high end beauty/glamour shot with great lighting, makeup and model, where everything is more extreme then possibly... but with something like this, as long as all the flaws are gone (which hers are), I prefer to not "see" retouched skin. To each their own, I suppose this is subjective.

Thanks for clearing this up for me in you last post here. The title of this thread is "glamour retouch challenge" I wanted a complete makeover just for the fun and to see talents! I really wanted full makeover from people here, so that we can see how different the before and after picture get's...

Thanks for the compliment , skin is in tact actually , but you know how it is , low res doesnt do the image justice. I use extract tool in CS3. All the best to you.

I think this was nice. You have tilted the head a notch! The skin is good, I miss more makeup on the left eye since you have it on the right one!

hehe...we have all encountered this problem...maybe if you want to share bigger pictures, you can always use external links...example is www.shareavenue.com it is down atm, but maybe it will be up later on...

BTW: there are prolly nasty mistakes around the edges... I didn't bother to do the masks 100% Just wanted to give the general idea ;)

saby: nice details there! the makeup detail is better,...the only thing I would change here is that "wet" line that goes down to the right under the right eye!

flice: welcome to us! you're ideas is most welcome! I would go for a different makeup color here...I see you have tried to match the head ban thingy...Some shadows under the eyes and on the side of the nose could be removed or softened...do you work with dodge and burn?

I gave it a try as well.. I couldn't bother to do much with the hair though.

RICK: This looks ok, would have worked better on the white goffy effect! The right side has a dark area...

MArtin: This looks nice! the eyes look too blue IMO. and maybe the skin could be a tad darker?! the mouth looks better as well...

Yes maybe a little too blue. I can never tell stuff like that as I am pretty much color blind. :P I can have a hard time making out different colors and also see when I have gone too far with stuff like eyes. Skin color is also very hard for me.. :/
Maybe I went overboard when brightening her skin, but I think that the skin is way too dark in the original photo. Looks almost a little underexposed. I should have stepped away from the computer for an hour or something before finishing, but after all it wasn't any serious work, hehe. :P

MARTIN: Wouldn't color management by numbers be good for you if you are color blind?

Yep that would be better. Should try it more...

Hello, I glamourized this with my photo enhancement software, Imagic Photo (http://www.imagic-photo.com), in about 30 seconds. I hope nobody takes this as a plug for my product, but I am introducing it as an alternative to photoshop, and would like to know what anybody thinks. Thanks!

Hi! everybody I'm knew to this, this is my first reply since joining, there is a lot of talented people in this group and i look foreward to participating & learning. Just added a bit of makeup(eyes, lips) darken a bit to emphasize this lady's pretty eyes.
