I've tried everything I know, from smart sharpen to unsharp mask, and I just cant get this decently in focus. Anybody help? Please? I'd like the clean photo to give to him as a gift along with the restored helm he is wearing in it.

P.S. If you wish to do any other ambitious resotrations on it, have fun, but please don't take out all of the background. It'd be like taking a picture of a football team in an empty stadium...just weird.

as craig mentioned in another post, maybe search for unshake (freebie), highpass did not fully do it for me, tried but unsatisfactory

You didn't say what software you are using, but if Photoshop CS2. The problem is motion blur. Either the camera moved or the subject moved.

Try Smart Sharpen set to motion blur and set the angle and amounts to suit.

Duh. Of course I didn't mention it, because I'm being stupid this morning. Sorry. (That, or this cold is getting to me more than I thought. :( ) I am using Photoshop CS2 and did try the Smart Sharpen, but it only comes out looking terribly grainy.

following on from swampy's suggestion.

I used the smart sharpen set on motion blur as her photo showed. Then I used a slight gaussian blur to help with grainiess, then smart sharpen again.

I also checked the levels and pulled those in again to help the colour in the image.

Tried Focus Magic with motion blur and out of focus blur, not much difference, went with out of focus.
Did a rough selection around the main figure and copied to a new layer, applied a Gausian blur to the first layer and then desaturated slightly ( to try and emphasise him a litttle more), adjusted levels etc.

I opened the photo in photoshop and copied the layer to a new layer
I ran the High Pass Filter setting of 8 on the copied layer and used overlay blending mode.

Unshake at 'severe blur' setting, 10. you'll need the java runtime environment installed to use Unshake.

i took the result and ran it through psp's 'digital camera noise removal' at a medium setting.

et voila'

edit: you might take the last result and overlay it on the original and use a blend mode to see if you can get it a tiny bit better, or, try adjusting the top unshake layer's opacity down a bit.

Thanks guys! The fixed images were really good, I'm going to try and recreate them on the MUCH larger original. :D
