I'm looking for a utility that will allow me to change which icon Windows shows for documents of a given app. So I could have Mickey Mouse for all my PSD files instead of the Adobe feather :)

You can also change the icon using the builtin features of Windows with just a bit more work. Start Windows Explorer and click on the menu item "Tools > Folder Options..." Select the "File Types" tab and scroll down the registered file types list until you see the suffix you want. Then, click on the suffix line to select it. Now click on the "advanced" button at the bottom of the dialog. An "Edit File Type" dialog box will appear. At the top, there is a "Change Icon..." button, click it and you will get the "Change Icon" dialog where you can either select a new icon from the ones in the preselected file or you can browse to another file to pull its icons. You would need to know where that Mickey Mouse icon file is located though. Doug Nelson 10-15-2006, 05:40 PM I don't see "Advanced", just Change and Restore. I have XP Home edition, perhaps that's a Pro feature? Kraellin 10-15-2006, 05:49 PM windows explorer\menu: tools\tab: file types\button: advanced. it's there in xp home. BobJones 10-15-2006, 05:50 PM That's interesting. I also have XP Home Edition and I have "Change" and "Advanced" -- no "Restore". I have SP2 installed but I think that menu Item option was there before that. Very Curious... Cameraken 10-15-2006, 06:03 PM Hi Doug. With Windows XP Pro you do not need a program to do this. Start > Control Panel > Folder Options Click the ‘File Types’ Tab In the list, find the extension that you would like to change the icon for and then click the advanced Button In the ‘Edit File Type’ box that opens there is an option at the top to change the Icon. You can choose a default icon or browse to an icon of your own I don’t know if this works with XP Home? Or even if I added this with Tweakui or something. Ken Kraellin 10-15-2006, 06:27 PM ken, that's the same one that shows in windows explorer\tools. also, since ken mentioned it, it's been a while since i used tweakui and i dont know if it does this or not. ken, you know? you might also try x-teq's, x-setup. this is another windows tweaking piece of software. x-setup is the older, free version. the current version is up to 8.xomething and is pay-for shareware. i found the older, free version still listed on tucows. Littlecoo 10-15-2006, 06:48 PM You may also need to resize and convert an image you want to .ico format first if it isn't already an image file of that type... at least I need to do this in W2kpro, I don't use XP so I am not sure what the deal is there. |
