View Full Version : Show Your Stuff!

the question recently came up whether this forum was for 'showing your stuff' or not, photographically speaking. the question was answered by Doug.

so, let's see some photos! post your pictures. strut your stuff. be shameless! a little self-aggrandizement can be good :) besides, i like seeing other's work! if you know the camera used and the camera settings, lighting, filters, time of day, location and conditions, do post those as well. but let's see some photos!

the normal forum rules do apply. watch the copyrights, follow the FAQs and keep it clean; we are a family site.

you are also still limited to a 100k file size here. you can use the gallery for larger file sizes or post links to your image if it's off-site.

but let's see your work! show me the money! professional or amateur, both are fine. you might also mention this as part of the details about the work.

if you want tips on doing better work, that's fine. if you want hard critiques, you might be better posting in the 'Critiques' forum. but regardless, let's see some of your work!

I took this in Newquay, it was about midday and overcast...sorry I don't have the settings but I have a Canon A80. I also did some overall adjustments to make it more moody.

Approx 35 to 40% of originals.

1. "Private Conversation" 2. "Flowers" This for all those who think I never shoot them.

Nikon D-50. 55-200mm Nikkor zoom. Auto settings.

Thanks Patricia.

Re. Mickey: my daughters are 27 years old now and we started taking them to Disney when they were two. So I've got a lot of pics of Mickey and all the other characters. Mostly with our daughter's arms around them. They still go to Disney just not as much. Since it's only a 2 hour drive from us, we still go several times a year. But it's getting harder and harder to avoid duplicating shots.

Ziaphra -- gorgeous image! The waves and the spray are sharp and heighten the mood, the clouds are spectacular and the overall contrast level adds to the mood. Very nice capture!

Steve -- really like the "Private Conversation" image. Street photography or candid unposed shots show more about people. The color contrast of the flower blooms is really eye-catching.

Went to the zoo to see the animals, but while waiting for the monkey feeding show, was lucky enough to find a nicely lit water bloom -- cropped from original image, curve added to increase contrast. Fuji S5600 - ISO100, 1/300sec. f4.5, 3:58pm -- in Sept. this allowed the sunlight to be at an angle that intensified the colors.

Okay, I'm game. Here are a couple of my shots.
The iris is in studio with lighting and a black background. Experimenting with multiple light sources and backlighting through flower petals. A little burn and saturation in Paint Shop Pro.
Camera: Sony Mavica (still a great little Point and Shoot.)

The hood ornament was "in the wild" at a car show. Backlit with natural sunlight through construction flashers. Not sure what the red streak was. Cleaned up some water spots and tweaked the colors.
Camera: Canon Rebel XT

BTW: Kraellin, care to do a critique of Paint Shop Pro-XI?

Unposed shots are a real interest of mine. Have to be careful about how they are used if you can't get releases. Hence the shot from the back. Doing "paintings" with "people" photos can work sometimes also.

Someone once pointed out to me that National Geographic emphasizes the shooting of images of people. And most of the photos they use are of, or contain, people.

I appreciate your nice comments.

I am working on some model concepts and really having fun with them. Eventually one or more of these will be part of my first print competition at WPPI in Las Vegas. I am very proud of these!

ETA: Oh yeah, I forgot the details. All of the indoor images were done in my dining room. (2) Alien Bee 400's. I use Digital Rebels (I am hoping Santa will be nice enough to bring me a new camera and some better glass....) All photography and post work by lil ol me....in the middle of Nowheresville, Wyoming...soon to be even Smaller Town Montana.

Amy, I love on the model images 1,2,3 and 4. Something about 5 doesn't set well with me, but it is a nice image still! When Santa sends you that camera, and new lenses, let me know and I will send you my addy so you can recycle your old one on me. I could use the upgrade, and I don't think Santa will consider me good enough this year!! LOL

I love all of your family portraits. That is the kind of work I want to do when I get a studio! Thanks so much for sharing your talent.

Have a Great Day!!

Went for a ride through the park today. I could barely make out the sun's shape as there was a high thick layer of white clouds. Combined with the snow cover, colors were very muted.

I shot this with a canon rebel xt using aperture priority at f8.

I really like this -- enough detail in the forest shows up, there is color in the mountains, the clouds show some detail, and the scrub in the foreground shows off thru the snowfall. Very beautiful! I'm so glad you showed this image because I hate getting cold and this way I get to see some of the beauty with none of the cold! ;)

I like the effect you got with that, cimager. Is that action under "image effects"?, or did you create it yourself? I do believe my grandfather may have had one of those paintings hanging in the dining room.

Here's a photo I took while walking around Brooklyn late at night. There is a full moon just behind the building, lighting up the clouds. Whoever parked the truck forgot to turn off the blinker before locking up for the night. I didn't even notice the Beware of Dog sign until I opened it up in Camera Raw. Here's what I did...

Camera: Canon 30D -lens: EFS 17-85(image stabilizer on)
I don't remember my settings, but it was hand held, no flash.
Existing light- moon, right blinker, street light.

Processed in Camera raw- adjusted exposure slightly.

Photoshop CS2- adjusted a curve layer to tweak contrast a bit.

I didn't do anything else to it. This is my first digital camera and I couldn't even believe this shot turned out! I didn't really want to enhance the shot any further, but am curious what any of you photo/photoshop lovers would do if it were your own.

Just got a nice new Canon 400d, thought I would have a play with some nice bright hdr since it's january and cold! :thmbdwn:

chrishoggy,

01-06-2007, 10:25 AM
Well I'm afraid my current budget limits me to a basic Fuji Finepix S3000. I know it's nowhere near the camera quality required for even semi-Pro stuff, but I work around it's limitations. I have made my own macro that fits on to the S3000's filter ring, using old camera lenses I have kicking about the house. All done with trial and error testing, to see what combination of lenses gave best results.
This is one I spent quite some time getting, but I got there in the end

Well thank you :o:  . I tend to be VERY hard on myself when it comes to photos I take. That gallery is quite out of date, but thought I would show it. This is one image I can say I am 100% happy with http://www.sxc.hu/photo/531481

Again taken with my S3000 with DIY Marco lens, and it has been very popular on the net. It's currently in use on a few website templates, and has been published in business brochures for a number of companies. Photoshop helps my photography quite a lot, but thats all part of the fun to me
It would be nice to get my hands on a high end camera, but putting money back in to my business comes before my hobby

I hate it when they put fences in front of me! If you put the camera as close as possible to the fence, it is possible sometimes to either get in between the wires, or make them so blurry that they don't show up as much.

Bridges are interesting pieces of architecture, aren't they!

New cameras are always fun, :) but remember -- it's us, the photographer, that makes the image; it doesn't really matter as much which camera we use.
