I make a custom brush by placing a figure or text on a blank document then simplify the layer then select it with the Rectangular Marquee tool then in Edit > Define brush from Selection and then name it. When I use it on another photo with the foreground color is black it comes out grey not black. I have the opacity set to 100%. Where as I going wrong?

Was the graphic for the brush solid black to start with?

Check the blend mode of your brush or paint layer?

Check the current transparency of the layer?

Are you painting to color or using it to Dodge/Burn? If D/B check the mode of the brush for Highlight/Midtones/Sadows.

Make sure that the figure or text that you are using to make the brush is also pure black, otherwise the brush itself won't have 100% opacity regardless of your settings.

Swampy and Kerry, thanks for your replies. The mode is set to normal when I use the brush. The graphic from which I'm creating the custom brush from is also black. try creating a custom brush yourselves and see if you have the same problem. If not, let me know the steps you took to make it .
Thanks,
Gregg

I've never had a problem with custom brushes. If the foreground is solid black on the preset then it comes out 100% opacity on the brush - maybe you could send us one of your brush presets so we could see for ourselves

I clicked on the brush in the options bar and then clicked on Reset Brushes. Now I getting a full black brush at 100% opacity. So the problem is fixed. Thanks for all who replied.
