Hi all,

I have been using Photoshop for the last five years to correct, enhance, repair and retouch photographs with ever increasing levels of success, until, that is I was given the attached to see if I could do anything with it. I have tried LAB, channel duplications, reversals and mixing, masking, selections and adjustment layers,all without success.
Am I wasting my time? :tired:

Not easy but "do-able", so you are not wasting your time.
Just need to spend a bit more. :D

I did not to work with the individual channels, although on your original that may be possible.

I worked in LAB, just trying to get the Luminosity right.
A lot of masking to get the adjustments to fall into the right places.
The colours on the right-side are pretty much useless, so I just painted them in as I saw fit.

With a lot more work, and using the original, it should be possible to get a much better result.

I gave it a try too... I used the green channel as a start. Then like byRo lots of masking to equalize the luminance.

Then using the original I added color back.

Butch, I tried painting the colours in on a "colour mode" layer but in no way did I get the saturation you achieved, did you stack the layers?
There is a niche here for a tutorial for this type of correction, I have scoured the 'net for weeks looking for help with this and drawn a blank. There are plenty that address image wide colour changes or staining but nothing for this sort of problem. This is the sort of image that is discarded at the outset (camera back opened before film had rewound) so maybe this sort of problem does not show up that often as people tend not to keep them.

The problem is that every one is a little different so a single tutorial would not help that much.

Thanks for the pointer, it does look like a similar problem, just different colours involved.
Why is it there is always at least 3 ways of doing anything in Photoshop? :)

The amount of color that will be displayed in color mode depends on the luminance of the grayscale. The closer to black or white the less color displayed.

We may just have different contrast on our grayscales. I mostly sampled colors from the original then opened solid color layers set to color blend mode. From there you can always adjust the color. And it does not hurt to scroll thru the blendmodes to see what works best. Nothing wrong with stacking layers if needed either.

And as mentioned selective color adjustments can help as well.
