Lyle...Really nice...great detail!!
Frank...You have really brought out the lovely colors...very nice...

Pavel Swampy 12-11-2006, 11:08 AM Wonderful shots, Pavel! I am amazed at the photographers among us who manage to frame such wonderful shots from mundane things.
I ran my "minumum" line art routine then used the blur and sponge tools to tone down the background barn. Used the sharpen tool to add detail to the foreground barn. Texture, frame. pavel123 12-11-2006, 02:44 PM PWL = Painting with Light...

Swampy, thank you  . To me photography is not necessarily about shooting spectacular sunsets and mountain views . It is more about creating certain mood. In fact one of my favorite shots is that of an old tin can.

pavel irshgrlkc 12-12-2006, 08:51 AM Nice job everyone, and they were lovely pictures to start with. Looks nothing like the "tree farms" (used very loosely) here in the desert, grumbling in jealousy.
I'm pretty new to the smudge technique so I thought I'd try it out on this picture. Steve Conway 12-12-2006, 09:15 AM Old trucks.....ain't nothing like 'em. Didn't a guy by the name of Tom T. Hall have a song or two about this?
Steve Kraellin 12-12-2006, 11:15 AM kerry,
i like that. you've taken all the 'grunge' out of the picture and left the essentials in a nice way. j
ust one suggestion here; maybe add some highlights or brightening here and there. maybe a little in the trees and some on the front of the truck... especially the truck to bring it out a bit more. palms1 12-12-2006, 01:12 PM Pavel great photo's interesting subject as well
i have been messing around again and here are the two i have come up with
1st one messed around with pwl and usm and the second one ahb and a emboss action
Palms pavel123 12-12-2006, 05:56 PM Kerry... very nice pastel colors
Steve... great renditions, both look great, the first picture gets my vote.
Palms... I've got to follow PWL manual, the results look awesome.
Pavel Frank Lopes 12-12-2006, 06:01 PM Now my turn to ask: what is "ahb"?
Pavel great photo's interesting subject as well

Palms pavel123 12-12-2006, 08:12 PM Now my turn to ask: what is "ahb"?
Ahb is art history brush.
Palms, is that a custom ahb preset?
Thank you.
Pavel irshgrlkc 12-12-2006, 09:12 PM Thanks for the feedback Craig, it is much appreciated. I was thinking of trying out the PWL tutorial on this image to see what I could achieve. :) palms1 12-13-2006, 02:35 AM Frank and Pavel
Yes ahb Is Art History Brush A great tool and if you havent already tried it give it a whirl
and No i tend to use trimoons brushes this one was the art spatter 15a which i downloaded from somewhere here, but try out the custom brushes especially the geometric shapes you can get some great results from them
Kerry nice smudge getting on very well with that technique, i too keep trying out pwl hoping it will click into place better soon  ( along with dodge and burn, colour correcting etc etc etc )

Palms Great shots! Great photoart derivatives posted. How about another watercolor? Swampy 12-13-2006, 03:15 PM Love that Junkyard truck!
Some color adjustments, PWL, sponge filter. Border created with spatter filter in QM mode. Line Art with curves and levels tweak. Texture.
You folks have done some wonderful versions. I'd expect Craig to add the junkyard dog.. Come on, Craig. Don't disappoint me.. LOL Steve Conway 12-13-2006, 09:21 PM Just one more shot at the great old truck photo. (Figuratively speaking, of course.) JimJam 12-15-2006, 02:38 PM I used Swampy's line art effect reduced opacity applied exclusion blend mode adjusted levels then added Xero Lithograph and AutoFX MTTC soft posterize. Oh and I used a gradient layer. Swampy 12-15-2006, 05:14 PM Way Kool, JimJam. I'm so glad to see you taking the basic sketch effect and expanding on it. :-) stosh7 12-15-2006, 07:56 PM I couldn't get past the barn.
How do you like it?

Patricia, you got me "dead to rights"..meaning yes it was a bit of Lucis and some last minute tweaking. Maybe a bit of USM to finish up.
Tom T. Hall was very popular in the U.S. a few years back. Wrote and recorded songs which told stories. One of my favorites was one he called "I Love."
Here are the words:
I love little baby ducks,
old pick-up trucks,
slow movin trains, and rain.
I love little country streams,
sleep without dreams,
Sunday school in May, and hay.
And I love you too.
I love leaves in the wind,
pictures of my friends,
birds of the world, and squirrels.
I love coffee in a cup,
little fuzzy pups,
bourbon in a glass, and grass.
And I love you too.
I love honest open smiles,
kisses from a child,
tomatoes on a vine, and onions.
I love winners when they cry,
losers when they try,
music when its good, and life.
And I love you too.

Thanks for the Lyrics to both songs ...the words are meaningful and so true...in both!!! Is he a country singer?
Patricia... :classic: Peter S 12-16-2006, 03:53 PM Well I just watched one of those online tutes for comic art, brilliant, I'll give that a go I thought. I got as far as Dupe the image and forgot the rest. (new brain needed).
So I winged it, made it up as I went along, I think its not too bad, maybe not the best but I do try (I am very trying I'm told).
Peter Swampy 12-16-2006, 04:26 PM Steve,
"Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine" was anthem back in the 70's! Still love the song. Another one of my Tom T. Hall favorites is "Down in the Florida Keys" Kraellin 12-16-2006, 11:29 PM a couple filters, some blend modes and a bit of reduced opacity here and there. palms1 12-17-2006, 02:35 AM Patricia, you got me "dead to rights"..meaning yes it was a bit of Lucis and some last minute tweaking. Arrgh... Craig.. where's the junkyard doggie?? LOLOL Very wild, but I kinda like it. pavel123 12-17-2006, 07:28 AM Arrgh... Craig.. where's the junkyard doggie?? LOLOL Very wild, but I kinda like it.
Swampy, I hope that the farm owners do not know about RetouchPRO forum. Lady of the house was not too happy with me taking pictures to begin with...she sort of relented then her husband said OK. If they do read about "junkyard", they may sue me. The place I think used to be a regular farm, at some point owners probably decided that growng X-Mas trees is easier. Swampy 12-17-2006, 10:51 AM I didn't mean to offend, Pavel. "Junkyard dog" is kind of a southern thing. Most farms in the south have a dog or two of the cur variety and are often referred to in those terms. You'd almost expect to see one in one of your photos and not of the registered "fu-fu" breeds. LOL pavel123 12-17-2006, 11:03 AM No offence at all, I was just trying to make a joke, my apologies if I sounded too serious. Tell the truth, the place did look a bit like ... you know... I did my best to keep the junk out of picture frame when I was taking shots...still...
Now I know what "junkyard dog" means. English is not my first language... I keep learning... CathyH 12-17-2006, 01:55 PM Hey Pavel
I had the same idea as you did.
These are great photos. Kraellin 12-17-2006, 02:01 PM dee dee,

Yes, his songs were done as a country and western artist.
Glad you liked the songs. He hasn't recorded anything recently that I know of and I miss his work.

I agree, never tired of hearing him do "Watermelon Wine."
Got to look that "keys" one up. I'm sure I must have heard it, but the title doesn't ring a bell.
Thanks.

My reputation is ruined! But I admit I have a weakness for those with a way with words. Johnny Mercer who wrote "Moon River" was a genius.
Steve Kraellin 12-20-2006, 12:50 AM dee dee,
i seem to remember the truck, but where'd the bear and goat come from? :) Phyllis Stewart 01-20-2007, 06:24 PM Pavel, these are wonderful photos! My favorite of all the terrific art versions is your first, the Photoshop watercolor... excellent!
LonK, I love the look of your watercolor... such a unique and striking style!
Steve, the first one in Paint Shop Pro is terrific! Great use of Lucis. You and I have a common taste in music, I think! I just love "old dogs and children and watermelon wine"... great country classic!
Coming late to this great thread, there are just too many to comment on, but lots of wonderful artwork here by all! Diane 01-20-2007, 06:36 PM Lovely Swampy....now i can try this great look ...thanks to your tute!!!

I think Swampy also posted this in one of the threads (thanks a lot, Swampy), but I do not remember there.
