can you post a sample? That seems to be the easiest way to tell whether or not they can be restored. I have done some really badly faded (means different things to different people).

If you do not have the s/w to down size the image, you can post it as is at http://www.imageshack.us
Copy the very last URL and paste it into your Retouch Pro posting.

Mark, welcome to Retouch Pro!

The image is quite faded but you can significantly boost the contrast as you can see in the 2nd attachment. For this quick example I converted the image to Black & White (because the orig was B&W) and applied a curves adjustment to increase the contrast. With a hi res scan you should get pretty good results. On a higher quality scan I would then proceed to selectively darken & lighten certain areas and remove some of the noise.
You can also leave the image tinted like attachment 3.

If you want to try things yourself, you will need an image editing s/w like Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements, or PaintShop Pro. There are a lot of programs out there inclung some freeware. However, Photoshop Elements might be a good investment. I think it costs under $100.
