View Full Version : Peace... Janet Petty 12-24-2006, 03:14 PM Rose for your painting/enhancement enjoyment.
We had been shooting indoors all day because it was raining. As soon at the sun peeked out, it hit the roses. This was shot at ISO400 at a 1000th of a second and F16. Usually I shoot flowers at F4 or lower. This was an oops. I think it turned out ok.
I'll be interested to see what everyone comes up with.
Merry Christmas. Enjoy.
Janet lkroll 12-24-2006, 11:21 PM Well I tried anyway. Had a lot of help with Panos Rainy Day action (http://panosfx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=27) (free by the way). :) Swampy 12-25-2006, 11:50 AM Janet, That's one beautiful rose shot! Sorry I went and messed it all up by smudging it with the liquify filter and adding a find edges. :-)
Merry Christmas, All! Janet Petty 12-25-2006, 02:52 PM I like the icy feel of yours Lyle. Swampy, please don't apologize. I love the look and your style.
Merry Christmas again.
Janet Kraellin 12-25-2006, 03:51 PM lovley flower, janet. i'm curious; is that a physical black background or did you put that in with photoshop? Janet Petty 12-25-2006, 07:17 PM Craig, a little of both. As I adjusted the curves, there were some areas that went totally black and some that were just way to distractingly white to leave that way. So I darkened them.
A black background is easy to do if you shoot with an f-stop of f-16-22 and use a flash. I've done that several times. This time, I forgot to change the ISO when I went outside. The flower turned out great, the background was mottled.
Does that make sense?
Janet Steve Conway 12-26-2006, 08:23 AM A few brush strokes.
Steve Steve Conway 12-26-2006, 08:46 AM A few different brush strokes..........
See Palms, I actually worked on this flower twice!
Steve Kraellin 12-26-2006, 12:10 PM thanks, janet. i kinda thought it was a bit too perfect for a purely physical background :) palms1 12-27-2006, 11:29 AM A few different brush strokes..........

I have noticed Steve and very nicely done too, and you are ahead of me been a bit slow over the festive period
Happy new year to you and everybody else here at retouch
Janet hope the new year takes notice of your rose's name
Palms Janet Petty 12-27-2006, 12:28 PM Janet hope the new year takes notice of your rose's name Palms
Thanks for all the the contributions so far. I didn't think it would be such a difficult subject for experimentation and that we would have had a few more posts before now.
Palms, I thought the name was especially appropriate considering that I took the picture in Jerusalem, Israel.
Happy, healthy, safe New Year to everyone.
Janet palms1 12-27-2006, 01:13 PM Well i have caught up a bit and here are my two offerings on the first one i used the art history brush,
the second i used swampys texture mapping technique
Palms Janet Petty 12-27-2006, 02:43 PM WOW Palms. You nailed it with number one. Great job.
Janet CharlesBell 12-27-2006, 02:57 PM I have been enjoying this thread. Question, why the dark black background?
Why not something greenish? chillin 12-27-2006, 05:32 PM A Gouache interpretation using Virtual Painter Janet Petty 12-27-2006, 07:48 PM I have been enjoying this thread. Question, why the dark black background?
Why not something greenish?
The original background had very little green in it. After the curves adjustment, there was more dark than light. I just got rid of what little light there was left because it was a distraction. As to the black...I was taught early on by instructors that the black background made the flowers and colors pop. In this case, I agreed. If I knew where the original was (does that say something about my filing system?), I'd post it for comparison.
Janet
Oh, and P.S. With the background the way it is, I expected to have some intrepid souls extract the flower and do funky things with it. palms1 12-28-2006, 06:05 AM WOW Palms. You nailed it with number one. Great job.
Janet
Thank you Janet number one was a small experiment adjusting the opacity of the ahb layer over the original
Palms Peter S 12-28-2006, 05:40 PM Well you wanted something done with the background!!!!!!
I went a little wacky with the rest - I got a new toy to play with.
Peter Janet Petty 12-28-2006, 05:46 PM Cool Peter. You are definitely inventive. :bigthmb: :bigthmb:
Janet Kraellin 12-29-2006, 02:00 PM nice, peter. reminds me of my whacky tram pic.
what's the new toy? Peter S 12-29-2006, 02:11 PM Craig
You gotta guess.
Clue begins with L
Peter Kraellin 12-29-2006, 09:04 PM you're painting with linguini? how odd! Peter S 12-30-2006, 06:35 AM you're painting with linguini? how odd!
Darn it made it too easy for U Janet Petty 12-30-2006, 12:44 PM I can't leave this rose alone. Here is my second interpretation. Posterize, AHB, Smudge, Impressionist (and masking), more Smudge, Sharpen, Texture. Enjoy.
Janet raniday 12-31-2006, 11:26 AM Just passing through......... Just passing through.........

Rô Janet Petty 01-01-2007, 06:52 AM Thank you Catherine. It is beautiful. I miss seeing you around here. And I LOVE your work. Can I say I know somebody famous???
Janet Well, it's not as red as it used to be.....
Peace to all in 2007! :bigthmb:
Rô Janet Petty 01-01-2007, 10:41 AM Very nice Ro. I love the colors!!!
HYN to you as well.
Janet CharlesBell 01-01-2007, 12:34 PM Janet,
I really like you impressionist rose. It is amazing how art like you have made it.
I was wondering what image prcessing program you were using to get "Impressionist". I don't know what AHB is.
Charles Swampy 01-01-2007, 01:55 PM Charles
AHB=Art History Brush in Photoshop. The ability to set a moment in the workflow then go back and paint from that state. raniday 01-02-2007, 06:36 PM Thank you, Janet and Ro.
Not famous, just having a great journey in my chosen addiction :)
Hugs to you both,
cat sunfly 01-05-2007, 07:51 AM Hi all,
Palms... wow and wow! I love your first interpretion... the one you did with the AHB brush. Absolutely beautiful work!
How did you achieve the background? It has that lovely watercolour wash of strokes on white effect.
Cheers,
Sherry
(I am so! I am a John Lovett / Joseph Zbrukvic wannabee... digitally, of course. Real brushes and paints have become my enemy.)

Photoshop CS2
Thank you sunfly praise is always gratefully received and enjoyed ( in a smug conceited way of course     well till someone brings you back down to earth !)
Now how i did the background, First i do the ahb work then save, reopen the image > new layer > fill with colour if wanted ( used white on the rose ) >
select the history brush at about 45% opacity, size about 75 and "bring" back the picture, holding your mouse button down go over in one sweep ( no overlapping brush marks) missing bits out at the edges then repeat until you get the depth wanted i usually do it 3 to 4 times
different brushes give different effects now unfortunately i cant remember which brush i used for this but it was probably from the natural brush2 set
hope you have been able to follow this any problems just ask
Palms sunfly 01-06-2007, 07:26 AM Palms... thanks for describing how you did it. You have kindly saved me many hours of not-so-quietly grumbling to myself. I am going to give it a whirl this morning.
Sherry barbara 01-19-2007, 08:38 PM Janet, your rose is beautiful
I used Gimp  on Linux patriciakay 02-02-2007, 07:57 AM Janet...
So sorry i am very late in posting....way behind.....I love your rose photo...beautiful...
I have just had another look through all the amazing renditions done by you all...Its great that from one photo so much can be done...a very well done!!!!
I just had to do a black and white, the second i did with the Lucis art filter...a little sculpture...framed both with an action in Photoshop...
Patricia... :dizzy: Janet Petty 02-02-2007, 09:41 AM There is never a late Patricia. I'm so glad you posted. The renditions you made of the peace rose are stunning. Great work.
Janet Kraellin 02-02-2007, 11:36 PM cat, very lovely!
patricia, i like both of those, and as always, your framing is exceptional. i just wish i could make real frames that good. Janet Petty 02-03-2007, 06:39 AM Barbara, your work in Gimp never ceases to amaze me. You are quite the master. I love the soft feel of the rose.
Patricia, what do I say? Your work is always top notch. You made the rose into superb artwork.
I enjoyed them both.
Janet GerryB 02-03-2007, 03:53 PM A Rose for a Rose: Janet Petty 02-03-2007, 04:06 PM To quote an old 60s cliche', "Right On" Gerry.
Janet patriciakay 02-04-2007, 05:53 AM Thank you Janet for your nice comments....Its such a beautiful photo, it really didnt need a lot of artifying...are you going to print it out big for your wall???
Craig...I also wish i could make these frames for real...woodwaork is not something i have got into...yet!!! Thank you for your kind comments...
Barbara and Gerry...Both are so lovely...
Patricia.... :dizzy: lkroll 02-04-2007, 08:32 AM Combining tessellations and Amazing Circles to get this one. The quality of the wallpaper is low (due to compression), but it's there just to show you that the main rendering is tileable. :) Kraellin 02-04-2007, 08:40 AM patricia, you're welcome.
yes, woodworking is one of those things that can also get the juices going. there's just something incredible about a fine piece of wood. but if you think photography is expensive, just wait till you start buying shop tools :) Peter S 03-18-2007, 04:52 PM I seem to have caught lkroll's bug, but with some other tweaks as well.
Honest it is your rose.
Peter Janet Petty 03-18-2007, 08:35 PM Honest it is your rose.
Peter
And isn't it gorgeous! You did a nice job on the manipulation.
