View Full Version : I did it i did it I did a good Pageant photo aileycat 01-06-2007, 08:52 AM Ok so my little one is just not with the whole getting her pic taken. But she let me get this one, And I'm just so happy with myself. I had to share it. Now I just got in to the pageant retouching thing. I've been doing them for freinds, but she would never let me get a good pic of her.
ohh this is the frist time I ever added hair, I think I'm most happy with that.

After
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f54/boutiquelady/000_0187.jpg its obvious that you put much time into this, and i must say, keep up the good work.
it like the dress... the hair is nicely done although the amount of detail in it is different from the rest of the picture and because of that my eye keeps pulling towards that part of the picture, the same problem also returns with the eyes.......... instead of completely redrawing the eyes it would be more realistic to touch op the original eyes. it would look better and it's probably less work then you've had now
goodluck and have fun. Coal. for some reason the idea is to replace the eyes on those images.. I don't understand it...you want to make it look unrealm doll-like! Go figure?
With that said..It looks great.
Still don't understand the look..
Lasa CharlesBell 01-06-2007, 01:10 PM The after looks like some one else to me. The eyes appear too large to go with the original face. The hair looks as if it should go on a much larger head too. The chin is altered.
Touch up? or new look?
I'm not an expert. Just giving you my impression. chrishoggy 01-06-2007, 01:54 PM Sorry but I must agree with the comments above. I would want a photo of my child, not a look-a-like based around a photograph. I don't agree with pageant photos at all (my personal opinion), but respect the work the retouchers do on them. To me the eye's are way too big, the wrong colour and too detailed, as is the hair. The only original feature left on the face is her nose :spchless: , and to me it looks like a different child :o: .
Please note these are my personal opinions, as I am not a pageant retoucher  Aurock 01-06-2007, 04:56 PM Ailey, your work looks very nice, for what you're trying to accomplish.
As with the others, I don't understand why you'd want to modify a photo of your child that drastically to the point it's no longer your child, but to each his own. dorkyraych 01-06-2007, 07:39 PM that's just incredible, lots of time went into that!! :D
Check out the list of changes made on this picture- I know someone has posted the before pic on another thread- but found this sort of out there- the eyes remind me of a horror movie where the dolls came to life.
http://www.naturalbeautiescontest.homestead.com/retouch4a.html aileycat 01-06-2007, 08:48 PM I think ya'll are rigth about the colorof the eyes, and I get the feeling that pageant photo may freak some poeple out. but most pageant photos do look like that. with the big doll eyes and the big hair. they are ment to look like dolls.
I still have so much to learn, and I do listen to what ya'll are saying. The only thing is there not ment to look like a reg photo. This is not a photo I would hang on my wall, but one I would enter in a pageant. Amber has been in 5 so and won the 3 of the photo contests.
As far as the chin, i REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT i'M doing there, any tips would be great.
as far as the the hair, what do ya'll think I should do to fix it. Most pageant falls ( wigs ) is that big 80's style. And thats how they wear them at the pageants. which is why I did it like that. So I'm un sure of what to do to make it better. should I just re size it to make it smaller. or what.
Like the post above is a another pageant photo. which is done by a real re toucher, which I'm not. but dose make me feel better, because it is kinda the same look. so please take a look at it.
Thanks you for all you ideas, tips, or whatevers.
soaking it all up,
ailey

Absolutely. Like I said, you did a very good job at the retouch work. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings or be rude at all, just saying I don't see why that style of photo is so popular. Then again, I don't care for some of the glamour shots I see either. Nothing against the retoucher, just a type of picture I like. aileycat 01-06-2007, 11:33 PM I didn't mean anyone, I just want everyone to share what they think, so I can use it to help me. even if I don't like, it could still help me. and thats why I shared it.
yes I read that forum I keep going back to refreash or try something out. I was searching pageant tut's thats how I found this group. I share it with everyone. all the info you need is here. plus all the help you can get. Cassidy 01-07-2007, 08:23 AM Ailey, to my way of thinking, she looks as if she has been crying, her eyes are still red and shiny and so is her nose. Personally I'd unredden the surround of the eyes and the redness of the nose, shine on the cheeks too, could be wrong on the eyes, but look like crying eyes to me CharlesBell 01-07-2007, 10:54 AM I don't know diddly about pageant photos. So I won't throw aspersions about it. It is what it is.
I thought the chin even though altered looked fine just different than the original little girl.
The eyes are what bother me the most. Seems like you could shrink the iris part of the eyes just a bit and it would look more natural.
The original little girl does not look to be very old and does not seem yet to have a full head of hair. That's why the wig looks so unnatural to me. Maybe a different wig?
The remake person looks to be several years older, not a baby or very young little girl.
I'm glad you posted this. It has generated lots of comments. I have learned about pageant photo "retouching". Thanks. aileycat 01-07-2007, 10:59 AM yes she has been crying, she hate taking pic. I'm gonna try to wrk on that reddness later, Kraellin 01-07-2007, 11:17 AM yes she has been crying, she hate taking pic. and THAT would be my one and only true objection to baby pageants. as far as the the hair, what do ya'll think I should do to fix it. about that hair.
the hair looks unsharp.
either
1: you smudgepainted it
2: cut and pasted it from a lower resolution picture.
fix it with a higher resolution picture of make a hair brush and smudge in more detail.
about the eyes....... take a look at this website's tutorial

Sorry, this looks like a plastice doll. aileycat 01-08-2007, 12:16 PM Sorry, this looks like a plastice doll.
thats the point topretouch 01-08-2007, 12:18 PM No thats not the point. There is a way to do pageant retouching. They are supposed to be PERFECT but still somewhat realistic. I can show samples if you like of what it should be like. I have been a professional pageant retoucher for 3.5 years. aileycat 01-08-2007, 12:35 PM No thats not the point. I don't charge that much, but I'm also not as good. If I got jobs you will too. and I know tons of pageant moms. some of them have even come to this site. because I love how much I have learned.

theres really not anyone doing pegaent photos on ebay. I don't even really do it. But I'm big in the groups and know a lot of the moms. thats how I got into it. plus it would bring more poeple to you site.
just an idea topretouch 01-08-2007, 01:07 PM Thanks for the idea. Never even thought about it. I am so busy already. I work for moms and photographers, plus I am a photographer. I will surely check into it!! Thanks! habitez 01-09-2007, 01:19 AM This is the most natural I've found

... however on this above mentioned site they mentioned removing "baby fat" on a BABY and that made me sad =(
I think you did a great job for the genre and it's cool that you are learning to do this for your little girl aileycat 01-09-2007, 08:22 PM I think those kinds are harder then the high glizt, and what baby fat, That baby did't have any. but its a good photo.
I didn't start on her I started with a freinds, then I enter her in one and saw how much it was to have a photo re done.
this is her very frist pageant photo for last spring, as you can see I didn't do much, but I didn't know much about it then. when I got to the pageant I was shocked at all the make up, but i'm used to it
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f54/boutiquelady/amberinfairlland.jpg
