Hi!

I've been looking for a tutorial on how to make keyline borders such as this one:

But all I've really found are expensive plugins.

There must be a way to do this?

Anyone care to share how?

Aah...much better tut as the one I pointed to was more for OOB.

Try this.
step 1.Open image

step 2. Image>Canvas Size and click on the box that says "relative"
Make sure the pull down menu for width and height iis set to "pixels" and the "canvas extention color" is set to "white. Then put in the pixel size of the white line to border the image.Then click OK.

step 3. Repeat 2
Only this time choose either inches or pixels to make the larger black border by setting the "canvas extention color" to "black" then click "ok."

to add a shadow (second attached image): make sure you are not on the "background" layer. If you are double click on the layer and call it something else.
Image>Canvas Size - this time make sure the "relative" box is not checked and increase the size of your canvas so you have room for the shadow. In your layers pallet "apple click" (on a mac, I think alt click on pc) on your layer to select the image and then choose drop shadow from the "add a layer style" menu at the bottom of the layer's palet.

Isn't this just a reverse crop set to the color you want?

I hope I'm not missing something but this seem rather straight forword.
- Open image and dup
- Select > ALL then Select => Save Selection
- Image => Canvass Size (add about 1/2 inch to width and height)
- Load Selection (select alpha1 if you left the default name)
- Edit => Stroke (set width, color, and check "inside" for location)
- Select => Inverse
- Edit => Fill (select fill color)

A variation you might find interesting is to use the image for the outside border. Same start but after Load Selection you want to duplicate the main image layer and use Edit => Free Transform to expand this layer well beyond the boundaries of the canvass. Then add a serious Gaussian Blur to this layer. Move this layer under the main image layer. Make the main image active and do the Edit => Stroke step above.

You can use Levels or Hue/Saturation on the blurred layer to adjust to taste.

I've never made one in Photoshop, though I do use PS6, I make mine in PhotoImpact under the Expand canvas option. I used a white expand colour set at 5 pixels then added the black expand set at 55 pixels for this one, then added the drop shadow.

i remembered 'keyline' as being something else, so i had to look this up again. but, it would seem it's been expanded to include borders now: A straight, linear element of variable length, having a uniform thickness.

at any rate, these are rather easy to do in Paint Shop Pro. and, you can save them as 'frames' once you have them or even script for it. but since i think you're using Photoshop, i wont bother for now.

however, you might also look up 'edges' when searching for plugins. there are quite a few free edges plugins out there or at least files which are edges and these might do some of what you want also.

and, if it wasnt for the expense part, i'd highly recommend Filter Forge for this. the framing capabilities of that program are really quite remarkable.
