Really quick and not completely perfect...

1. Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer
2. In the 'Edit" pull down menu select 'Reds'
3. Slide Saturation to -100
4. Slide Lightness to -100

This could be refined with layer masks to do a better job.

Yes, by playing with the sliders in the hue/saturation adjustment layer you could get other colors, however the quality won't be very good.

The link below will take you to a tutorial to change the color of a different car (and method works with other objects) with really good results.

One of several tutorials in the tutorials section explains masks better than I, one of those tutorials can be found here http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=166

The best way I know of to do selective color changes is with LAB curves. I did these in less than a minute converting to LAB, writing an adjustment curve, and then limiting the curve with Blend if sliders to areas where the original layer was strongly positive in A. First is black, but I prefer green.

You didn't try LAB curves. For yellow, you make the A curve a flat horizontal line accross the middle, and boost the B up as far as you want. Then make the L curve bright enough to drive to real yellows.

On this picture, it required a quick mask of the red in the car and then of the wheels. Masked the red by using the A channel, and the wheels in the Blue channel. Overall this took about 5 minutes, and could be polished up a bit by more careful masking. But I think this drives the point accross. LAB is superior to Hue/Saturation for color manipulation.

For a basic guide on how LAB curves work, you could check here:

http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=50368

And here's a guide to using LAB for masking:

http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=22331

If you are interested in this sort of thing, you could do worse than reading Dan Margulis' The Canyon Conundrum, which is the best (and maybe the only) book written on editing in LAB.
