This is my post and it is the first time on this site also. I am trying to learn how to do something but I don't know what it is called so I can't do a search on it to find past posts about it.

I see a lot of portraits where the photographer takes the picture and puts it on top of a white background that is a little bit larger than the actual picture and it also has shading normally at the bottom of the picture and up the right side of the picture. The shading gives the look of depth so it appears to be slightly above the background so there is a shadow of the original picture.

Also I sometimes see where a photographer has taken two or three pictures and put them on the same large white background and turns the pictures at a angle and shadowing the edges. What is this called and how do I do this?
Thanks for any help with this..

What your describing sounds like a layer style called drop shadow, in Photoshop these styles are found under the layer menu, there are lots to choose from, play round and see what they can do.
