Nice find.

I never update to a new OS till at least the 1st service pack is released, even after all the beta testing there's always far too many bugs that haven't been found.

With an approx 50 million lines of code, I expect Vista will have a whole lot more little "idiosyncrasies" to be discovered.

Yep, we're getting Vista issues already on the Packard Bell forum. One that came up, seems to be happening to a lot of people. "Error code 12" for people that have onboard graphics, but have installed a PCI/AGP video card. Disabling the onboard in control panel and in bios does not fix it. So they are stuck :heul: Think it may be a Bios update that will fix it, but who knows at this stage?

Ugh! Major bugs... I am surprised that probs like these 2 were not picked up on pre release (esp regarding onboard video which is pretty much standard on motherboards now). I'm like you Gary, I don't take up a new OS until it's been 'worn in'.

Nice of you to post the warning Swampy. The reporting of your pain will no doubt prevent others from experiencing it.

Thanks.

I posted this on Worth1000 and this is the advice from someone there and I hope it helps a little! :)

"They used the standard formatting for tagging images, the problem is with the camera companies. Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Canon just to name a few have decided that they each need to have their own proprietary camera formats, and that only their software should be allowed to work with their RAW images.

Oh, a second thing to note is that the fixes are all out there already. All you need to do with Vista is check for updates with the Photo Info software.

Many of you may remember Photoshop dealing with the very same issues a while back at their last release. i find it amazing that when MS offers a completely free program to do something, we expect it to have all the features and strengths of the big name programs. As for me, I will just say "thank you" to Bill Gates and Microsoft, because when i eventually upgrade to Vista, I will be able to do loads of things I could not do before without buying expensive third party software."

LOL, Danny.. I'm on a Mac, so the problem doesn't affect me, but I just thought the PC'ers here should know. :-)

Vista doesn't do anything to the metadata just by using the OS. You have to use Vista's metadata editing tools before there's any risk. If you stick with Photoshop or your camera's software there's no danger.

And yes, I'm running Vista :)

My commiserations. :D

No, Vista is wonderful! With the exception of a couple of drivers that haven't been updated yet (but will whenever the developers get darn good and ready) it has impressed the daylights out of me.

Between Vista and Office 2007, I've been able to ditch a bunch of my old utilities because their functionality is now built-in.

But this is for another thread :)

Points well taken, but there is a danger in using Vista or MS's Photo Info Tool.

They always say that, until the number of patches is so great that they just have to release an SP.

I take most of M$ announcements with a huge pinch of salt when they're relating to a new product. Pragmatism usually modifies their initial intentions greatly.

Still haven't seen anything with Vista to make me want to "upgrade", and an awful lot that makes me not want to at all.

Vista SP1 is already in testing stages, so I think you will find SP1 out by the end of this year. SP1 was actually scheduled for the second half of 2007, a few weeks after Vista was released :) It should come out at the same time as XP SP3 :dizzy:

hmm that's odd. cuz there was a press release by microsoft spokesman saying that all patches will be via live update so that they can authenicate legit users. they wont issue SP.

even if it's SP. it's gonna be like a 500kb file that will authenticate and start downloading on your own. kinda like WMP11 and IE7

Press spokesman for MS 4/4/2007 (yesterday)
Although Microsoft has previously confirmed the existence of Vista SP1 -- and a company spokeswoman repeated that today -- it's not ready to talk about a release date

From what I'm told XP SP3 is delayed until 2008, so I would expect Vista SP1 to be delayed too :) Stepo (Stephen Toulouse) head of MS security team, has also said there will be a Vista SP1 release. I doubt MS would continue to retail a Vista Version that is totally out of date with it's security. They would be leaving customers wide open to abuse from the second they switched on their new system/OS, and customers will not stand for that.

Think if all XP systems retailed now had no updates on. I would say 75% + would get Blaster worm before they got chance to even view the updates site. That would in effect prevent them from getting the updates to block the threat, as it would close their connection with the dreaded 60 second countdown :dizzy: .

This link makes for a good read too.

I'm sticking to a drawer full of negatives, Windows 95 and Mac OS X.
They all work fine.
