Gerry, I like where you are going with that. IMO now that you have dropped back the colour saturation and tone, the image looks a bit flat. Some more contrast etc to acheive depth and texture, especially in the man's face would make a great difference.

Nice effect, Gerry. I left a little more color but gave him a slightly more weathered look.

yup, this is always interesting. the 'dragan' look does this quite dramatically. there are some good dodge and burn ones and paint with light ones also.

superkoax, would you mind if i used this image on another site, specifically the filterforge.com site? i'm making filters there and one of the filters i'm currently working on is a portrait and luminosity masking filter. your picture here is a good one to practice one and sometimes i like to display my results over there.

here's an example of one:

Like Craig said, this portrait is a perfect candidate for the Dragan effect.

Hi Folks, I’ve just found your site and finding it fascinating. I really like the “Dragan effect” how do you achieve that and can I download a h-res image to give my option on it?.

Ralph,

The Dragan Effect that they are referring to is a technique of manipulating a portrait to achieve a look similar to the work done by Andrzej Dragan. Here’s his site:

http://andrzejdragan.com/

I don’t know how everyone here is going about achieving their particular results, but I have found some stuff that might be helpful. There is this 10 step tutorial that claims to do the trick (I personally don’t think that they got the Dragan look):

http://www.mutantsoup.com/10steps.zip

There is also an Action that you can download, but I have my doubts about it and never bothered with it. The best thing I have found is this video tutorial:

http://www.savefile.com/files/60502

Hope that helps.

I love your image Gerry, I just had to try my hand at it.
In keeping with the style you are working to acheive, I just used a combo of layer blending modes and some masking as shown in the screenshot of my layer pallette.
