At the risk of making myself sound stupid—but I'm having trouble saving my files down enough in order to meet the 100kb 800x600 entry size. 800x600 has been done, but the lowest I've got my file down to is 72dpi saved as a jpeg at '5' quality which comes out at 192kb.

Can anyone give me any clues on how I can save down further. Save for web maybe?

cheers,
N.

You will have to keep raising the compression number until you get at 100kb or lower... I keep adjusting the compression and saving until it arrives at the proper size. The quality may not be what you desire, but we all have to live with that...

Believe me, this is one of the most asked questions by everyone, so don't feel bad. "Save for web" is the way to go -- click the link in my signature -- it will lead you to instructions if you have any more problems.

Just posted my entry for this month. I hope to still get a chance to tweak it a bit as I'm not completely happy with it, but I do just want to warn you that we might not make 100% voting again this month and if we don't, it may well be because I might not be able to log on as I'll likely be giving birth at or around voting time. Baby #2 is due March 20th. :)

OUCH! I think voting would have been easier.

Congratulations, hope everything goes well for you.

Best wishes.

Neillo,

I see that you have been having trouble saving your image, but don't forget that your:
Final image must be exactly 800 px wide and 600 px high.
Otherwise your image will be disqualified. Right now your image does not meet this requirement. If you still need help please ask. :)

Problem has been corrected.

I'm not punting (yet) ;) I just want to appologize in advance if it's me that keeps up from 100% voting again. I'll try to get on as soon as nap schedules allow!

Luciachan,

Just a friendly warning that you need to resize your entry in order to avoid being disqualified.

Chillin, you made me giggle. :classic:

In my humble opinion these are the only restored pictures. All others are beautiful, but more-less artistic expressions.

I can't draw to save my life and am perversely thrilled that you think my image is a bit too artsy. Woohoo, maybe there's hope for me yet. :pleased:

As one of those who offered 'some washed over, airbrushed-in other person's idea of what' the little girl may have looked like I just want to suggest that probably the best reason for putting a face on the girl in this contest is to gain experience doing it, because somewhere along the line you'll be asked to do something like this by a client who wants a face rather than a washcloth with ears, and you'll both be happier if you feel confident about giving it a shot, instead of explaining that as a 'professional restorer' you aren't allowed to do that.

Also as one of them people :classic:

I used the face of the youngest child{that had a face} in the photo because most siblings usually favor. Katrin Eismann books recomends this technique.

Good point, Doug. The only reason I didn't try to restore the child's face more is because I didn't have time. You never know what a client is going to want, so it's good to try it both ways: both the purist approach and artistic.

March is almost over so don't forget to get those contest votes in!

T Paul
03-31-2007, 06:53 PM
WOW, what a close contest! We even had a tie for first and had to go to the tie breaker.

Contest FAQs (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/contests/13446-contest-faqs.html)What happens in a tie for first?

The tie breaker is determined by who has the most first place votes. If it is a tie again, then we will look at who has the most second place votes and so on until a winner is determined.

And the winner is....Soleah!

Top 5
1. Soleah (tie breaker) - 33
2. irshgrlkc - 33
3. Lorraine - 32
4. Doug Colwell - 25
5. lilsip - 18

Thanks, everyone.

Sorry, I only got back today. Had problems with my ISP since March.

In recontructing the baby's face, I used the faces of the 2 boys,
1. Copied each in it's own layer
2. Resize it to fit the baby's face
3. Lower the opacities to blend well
4. Masked some areas to preserve whatever details existing in the baby's face, especially the eyes and eyebrows.

Great job, everyone for tackling this one.
