Hi there, I have to merge together two faces. So that two halves, of two different peoples faces become one. This here is a quick test picture to see if anyone out there has any good tips on how to go about doing this? The image that I need to do I am photographing tomorrow. Does anyone have a good technique to do this??

I have put two images one of the showing roughly what I mean and the other with the two halves, if any one is up for a bit of a play.

You mean something like this? This was done quick and dirty, maybe 5 minutes tops. No attempt was made to make the skin colors match or "fix" the hair. The rest was easy. I used a very slight free transform to match chins, noses, and eye level. Her mouth was dominant. So I used it on both sides. Some slight cloning to bring back the beard. And that's all.

another quick attempt. Mouth is a little funny because one had an open mouth and the other closed.

I took the girl and set her blend mode to difference so I could line her up and scale her to match his face then just masked them in to blend

Used PS3 Beta to auto align two layers (I did flip one face horizontally) added gradient mask. Did a little dodge and burn and clone/heal of stubble. Didn't spend too much time.

When you shoot make sure that the eyes and mouth of each face are in the same perspective and are positioned in the same area of the frame before clicking the shutter. This will make your job much easier later in Photoshop

Firstly thanks everyone for all of your efforts I am really impressed. I think that probably the ones that seems to work for me the best are from Nancy and Dcobb. I have now taken the pictures that are to be used, would anyone be interested in having a crack at something perhaps more challenging? The lighting is from the front left hand side. I am not sure if mirroring the faces will work better? Also at this stage I am not sure whether I will do it with long hair or short, so I have included both. This certainly is a bit trickier as the noses do not align quite so readily. I appreciate you all take a look at it.

...and just to satisfy your curiosity, the image is for a flyer for a play, here in Berlin. The play is about a dialogue between two young girls. One is Jewish and the other is Palestinian. For the flyer they wanted to merge the two images and asked if I knew how. I said “not really but I think there are a few clever people out who may be able to help!”

The short hair version is certainly easier..!
This was just a straight selection of one half, with a 10 pixel feather and some fiddling with the lips. (I had to use all the lips of the green eyed girl).
Slight levels adjustment to better match skin tone.

This is my try on the first pair. Just a side note, the face in the original on the left of the pair was 17% smaller that the face on the right.

The long hair version is more difficult.. had to move lips nose and chin to match them up. Also more difficult to match skin tones, especially on the chest area

I have a long way to go to reach dcobb and prinmeister's level, but, here's my try anyway.

Copying, pasting, cloning, smudging, warping, also played with levels and curves to try and match skin tones. It ended up too bright and the nose bridge is out of whack.

I don't think this is going to work.
By trying to match up the two faces you are loosing the features that you want to show. One girl has very different features to the other and by matching them up the features have to be distorted and the difference is minimised.

I think it may be better (and easier) to not match up the features. This would show the differences far better.

Here are my two options. And some thoughts in agreement with Ken - the two faces are proportioned differently and had to be sort of morphed to match up features. Their complexions had noticeably different tones too, which made the hairy merger harder. Results are interesting but don't look like either girl (then again, maybe that's the point! One could get really philosophical here . . .) There were several points where I almost stopped short of a complete merge so that individual characteristics would still be emphasized. Depending on the message you're trying to get across you might want to do just that.

Lined up the faces, mask one & paint. Some patching & rotating is required.

The merged photos pretty much look like "a person" at a glance. I'm not sure if it does what you are trying to acheive. At least, that's the way I see the finished images.

I created the middle face with Squirlz Morph. It's an average of the two other faces.

Panpan, looks great, but given the cirumstances, as in brochure for a play, reckon the differences need to be a bit more obvious. This looks like a cultural division I think

I don't want to cut in on the fun, but I don't think the idea is going to work very well with the merge. It's always going to look weird, and if it looks great, then you have lost the features of the 2 girls.

what I think could be a good idea is to do two half faces separated by a gap, may be white gap, with the name of the play in the midle of them.

Just my two cents.

Here's one place I would have stopped. Something like this, IMO, would work better in the flyer for the play.
