I've been using just the history brush. I can't control that Art History brush and you never did tell me how you guys do it. All that "tight curl" "loose something else" dab, etc just seems to sling paint all over the place and out of control. I've tried with minimum settings and still get glop all over the page.

I'm having better luck using the History brush or painting with the Pattern Stamp.

As for tight short/medium, long, curl or dab. I've not been using curl or dab very much yet just the first lot.
It's just experimenting with brush, type/size etc. I've found that using different layers for different size brushes helps, you can then delete any stroke that go too far astray if you want without destroying the other brush strokes underneath. Though by using smaller and smaller brushes can cover up a lot of the glop (good description).

Swampy just to add my tuppence worth and probably throw more confusion, It is very rare that i mess with settings apart from opacity, Trimoons brushes are set up and ready to go no need to alter ( others probably are but not sure till i look ) again I find altering the brush size to much changes "how it works" ( again Trimoon's spatter brush comes in about 5 sizes ) and yes i work over a few layers so they can be altered, plus you can make a "copy" of a brush at a smaller size
