View Full Version : "Plain Jane" retouch mini-challenge mellyrose 04-13-2007, 09:43 PM I took this photo of my friend who is a singer. She's pretty, but very plain.
I'm posting the original photo straight from the camera for all to have fun with. Just for fun....I'd love to see some dramatic retouches of her...I've already done a simple one as you can see below.
HIGH REZ PHOTO - have fun! (www.nycaviation.com/hosting/IMG_2769.jpg) lkroll 04-13-2007, 11:40 PM Gamut replacement, cloning, healing brush, and byro Degrunging to name a few. Sorry for the low quality due to compression. :) Cassidy 04-14-2007, 02:47 AM Softened the skin a little, evened the skin tone, warmed the tone of the picture overall with a photo filter, cropped, repaired damage to windows, levels adjustment to create more contrast Out_Of_Focus 04-14-2007, 05:57 AM here my try shootphoto 04-14-2007, 07:35 AM here is my attempt. NancyJ 04-14-2007, 07:52 AM I think your friend is very pretty, I wouldnt say she was plain, but I think she needs more practice in front of the camera to get more relaxed and natural, she looks a little bit like she's saying in her head 'please get this over with, I dont want my picture taken' Cupcake 04-14-2007, 09:15 AM Not A pain Jane!!!!!!!! mellyrose 04-14-2007, 09:52 AM Great work everyone!
NancyJ, that's pretty much what I was imagining as far as dramatic goes. What was your WF? ruud92 04-14-2007, 09:57 AM Here is my try, let me know what you think.. Cupcake 04-14-2007, 10:10 AM Good work Ruud92 mellyrose 04-14-2007, 10:12 AM Yes, very nice! :) ruud92 04-14-2007, 10:25 AM thank you both:D! lilsip 04-14-2007, 12:17 PM She's not plain at all! She just needs a cool hairdo to go with the gorgeous face imho. I might play around with the pic later if I don't get blown away by these storms coming through the southeast... palms1 04-14-2007, 12:19 PM here is my attempt trying to get to grips with this but have a long way to go to get to nancy's standard
Palms stephmarie23 04-14-2007, 12:25 PM I'd be interested in knowing how you retouched that ruud. It's stunning. mikoe 04-14-2007, 12:31 PM Took out a few blemishes (there weren't many to start with), evened out hairline, minimized shadow in nostril, thickened eyelases, tried to fix the nervous smile, otherwise going for a fairly natural look (i.e. no facial features altered)

That looks Great Mikoe! Cameraken 04-14-2007, 02:24 PM Hi.
I don’t think she is plain at all. She is very pretty.
This is Way OTT. But she is a singer. I was thinking of her Album cover.:)
Ken. mellyrose 04-14-2007, 02:35 PM Wow, that's great! Fantastic work with the hand. Nothing plain about her, she beautiful...looks like the picture was taken in a train or bus hardly the best lighting.
Basically softened and added some saturation to her skin...filed out some more eyelashes..not much more...rest is pretty much her.
Lasa NancyJ 04-14-2007, 04:07 PM Great work everyone!
NancyJ, that's pretty much what I was imagining as far as dramatic goes. What was your WF?

45209 superkoax 04-14-2007, 05:24 PM looks like this thread is going to be a big one...here is my version...
just worked on blemishes, cropped it...disturbing details in background...flying hair...teeth(fixed the gap abit) overall retouch on skin(D&B)...
Gerry mikoe 04-14-2007, 07:17 PM I had done two other versions also. Might as well throw em into the mix.
One is a BW version, and the other a desaturated approach. See what ya think.

It's my first post to this forum and this is my try mellyrose 04-15-2007, 03:34 PM I love what you did with her mouth....very supermodel-esque! chauncey 04-15-2007, 05:16 PM I'm not going to do anything but I will say that this young lady is beautiful sans makeup, I can only imagine what she would look like after a visit to a parlor. mellyrose 04-15-2007, 05:20 PM Just to clarify, I never said she wasn't pretty...I said she WAS pretty, just plain! ...and I only meant she was plain as in, she doesn't wear make-up, do her hair fancy, etc. But, I think she's gorgeous as well. :) leuallen 04-15-2007, 05:46 PM My version. Tried to keep it more natural but with a little drama.
Larry mellyrose 04-15-2007, 05:57 PM Larry, I love what you did with the background. KR1156 04-15-2007, 06:12 PM Living and breathing pixels.
-would that be a quote from nicole @ the professionals?!?!? mellyrose 04-15-2007, 06:14 PM Maybe, but I never knew...who are you speaking of?? DCobb 04-15-2007, 07:11 PM Beautiful girl. This is my try.
dc RokcetScientist 04-15-2007, 08:43 PM With a good stylist, hairdresser and make-up artist, she could look stunning! CathyH 04-16-2007, 05:05 AM Hi
I think everyone has done a great job.
She was fun to work on, pretty and not to much wrong with her skin.
I did two versions, one more dramatic. LQQKER 04-16-2007, 07:07 AM To begin with, I screwed up. I downloaded the small picture and when I had time I artified it, not realizing that this was only a retouch. So I apologize in advance. Bridestream 04-17-2007, 01:09 AM Hi everyone! :wavey:
Usually I'm a lurker, but I saw this great picture, and thought I'd give it a try! I actually have 3 versions, hope that's ok. :)

Well, don't lurk anymore! I like your third one. I like the makeup that you have applied. I also like that you tried to darken the background. That background really doesn't add anything to the picture.
Mellyrose, I like your original one too. I like that you have added depth of focus by blurring the background. Only one thing....I would have cropped it the other way so that the open space was in front of her.
I cropped that background out altogether so that I could get a larger focus on the main subject for my 100k and also because there is nothing in it that is particularly interesting. I cleaned up some of the stray hair on her shirt, cloned out that clip in front of the right collar. I liked the gap between her two front teeth so I left that but I decreased the size of her left nostril which looked out of proportion to the right one (I guess that was the camera angle). It is not a very flattering shot of her nose to be honest and I am sure she has a perfect nose :classic: but it is just that the camera is looking up at her and it has gotten a bit distorted. I also changed the catchlights in her eyes and brightened them up a bit.
Syd mellyrose 04-17-2007, 09:15 AM Fantastic job Syd. You really did her justice! Thanks for your feedback on my version. :) Hi there,
I did something different, hope you like it ;) (in fact, corrected several details, as mouth, lips, teeth, and makeup, amongst others).

-Beni- mellyrose 04-21-2007, 06:38 AM Very cool approach! I can tell that you had fun with it. :) Wolfman 04-23-2007, 12:18 PM I gave it a try and tried to keep her natural. emilylt87 04-23-2007, 07:00 PM Heres my stab at it, let me know what you think!:) | |
