I really admire her work - http://www.photo.net/photodb/user?user_id=640663 - while I don't want to copy her exact style, I would like to understand how she gets those muted colors. Is this a coloring process she goes through? A desaturated function? I just can't put my finger on it. Any ideas?

these pictures are done with load selection and pushed up the shadows,...used burn tool around the eyes...and the work on the eyes are very good...the yes are sticking out in every picture...som degree of curves and color adjustment...

I've created muted colours like that by layering, desaturating or colorizing one layer (top) and then lowering the opacity. there's also a lot of dodging and burning in there too as noted above. . .
