first of all this is the look of an exampl of what i mean - any ideas how to get that? I already tried adjustmentlayer with hue, but that doesnt give such a strong effect.. :(

Pick a dark brown from your posted photo and add a gradient map. Duplicate that layer and set it to multiply. Reduce the opacities of both/either maps until you get the look you're after.

My results were close to the image posted.

I really really like a lot of that persons photography.

Part of this is the lighting, but the overall look is very similar to the bleach bypass darkroom technique. There are probably tutorials about simulating bleach bypass, but I know of a couple plugins that can also do this. One is free. If it started off as a color photo, desaturate the image and tint it a light brown. Make a new layer, color over the skin. Use the hue/saturation adjuster (Ctrl + U or (Cmd + U for you Maco weirdos)) to adjust to taste. Hair and lips may require a little more attention, but not much. This basic technique would apply to anything you want to bring out.

That's basically all you have to do and will get you most of the way there. The rest should be obvious and left to your own intuition.

Please follow these steps and tell me how you feel

1. (Ctrl+J) Duplicate > softlight > Opacity 50%
2. New Layer > fill color A36107 (Brownish or and color tone you need)>
Soft Light > Opacity 50 % or about you taste
3. Create New adjustment layer> brightness & Contrast > brightness +12~15 > contrast +3~8

In this photo background is white but on gray background you will get similar results

Combination of curves/D+B/Split Toning and bringing back some of the original colors through opacity.

Had a play and used a black/white gradient map and reduced the opacity to let the colour show through, did a heavy high pass overlay and selectively used the highlights created with a mask. Finally a sepia photo filter. And one copy without the sepia photo filter.

I gave this one a try cause I find the effect intriguing as well.
