I am having problems cloning out the rig in this shot. I have tried the patch tool and have tried the sans cloning technique but it is still obvious where I have been.

Please can someone have a go and tell me where I am going wrong.

Steve.

Steve, for something like that, your best bet is the pen tool.

Never used that tool before please explain more.

I gave this a try with the clone and patch tools. I also used a Dodge and burn layer, to darken and lighten up the ground.

Hi steve,
I masked out the rig, did some cut an paste, clone and patch, dodge and burn.

for the dark part of the tire track, i would cut & paste it from another section, then adjust it with free transorm to make it fit...instead of trying to clone it, because it will be hard to clone it perfectly with the curve it's on, maintaining texture.

*also, don't firget to get rid of the rig's subtle shadow.

Yep the shadow is a pain.

Thanks to everyone so far with their input, it give me a few different approaches to try. Results to follow.

KR thanks for the tip. I did it again from scratch.

My appologies, I misunderstood what you were trying to do. I completely missed the reflection! Getting old and addlebrained! :-)

Thanks. That looks good Swampy...but how did you do it as I have never used pen tool before?

Richard.. I thought you were asking how to extract the car. For that the pen tool is probably the best choice, but I see you only wanted to extract the forground "boom/rig" thingy.

So, like others, clone the track area or use the polygon tool to select a vertical selection under the car (in a good area), put it on it's own layer, Free Transform etc. Use the smudge tool to blend the pavement.

Mine is a very quick touching. Definitely not my best work.

I thought that also. In the US, a large truck is called a rig.

Pasting and cloning.

I assume the "rig" was the long silver pole going out from under the side of the car? I used the patch tool, cloning, and healing brush.

Sorry UK here. Rig is the pole and the vehicle is a 4x4.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I have found the laso tool and then select in the middle of the selected area and move the mouse works well for isolated patches.

I found the best way to do it was draw a slection around the rig add motion blur and then levels to blend.

Hey, richardi... I'd have never thought to do it that way! Good tip.

It's always good to hear that the 'poster' finds him(her)self the best or easiest solution to do the job.

By the way, I just noticed that there is still a reflection of the rig in the frontwheel. At least I think it is...
